Book review – Wild Service: Why Nature Needs You – Edited by Nick Hayes and Jon Moses

Packed with enchanting essays about people’s personal relationships with nature. Several brought a tear to my eye.

It looks at why many people have lost the deep connection with the natural world that was once taken for granted.
Another theme is Right to Roam. Unlike in Germany or Scotland, citizens in England and the US are unable to walk where they wish without trespassing.

#UK #catsofmastodon #righttoroam our neighbour complained about our cat going to their balcony...I guess people still think she's a tom just because she is ginger, she is neutered and doesn't spread but does enjoy her range of patrol. Not sure what to do.

Ginger longhair cat peeking through fensThe Right to Roam and Control Differences

A significant difference between cats and dogs under UK law is that cats have a "right to roam." Unlike dogs, which must be kept under control, cats are permitted to wander freely. The law recognises the impracticality of restricting a cat's movements, as well as their lower risk of causing injury or property damage

The annual Dartmoor hike-and-camp trip with G is done for another year. I wouldn't mind being back there now with this view, although I'd happily skip the torrential rain that arrived the following morning as we walked down from the moor. #hiking #walking #camping #righttoroam #dartmoor

At Metheral Stone Circle, recently rediscovered last year by Alan Endacott. Most of the stones are hidden in the grass and peat of Taw Marsh, but the setting between Metheral Hill and Oke Tor, overlooked by Steeperton Tor is striking. I hadn't visited this valley before, so it was good to explore new ground.

In the #BBCnews article on the judgment upholding the right to wild camping on Dartmoor, they make it clear that this is the only place it’s permitted in England. But they can’t bring themselves to point out we have the #rightToRoam, including responsible camping, across most of Scotland, as is the case in many other northern European countries.

Woo hoo! In the words of the Right to Roam campaign:

"The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of wild camping on Dartmoor. A right that was under threat has been upheld. For now, the last place in England where people can legally sleep under the stars, without payment or permission, remains open to all."

“The Land Reform Act 2003 gives everyone rights of access over land and inland water throughout Scotland, subject to specific exclusions set out in the Act and as long as they behave responsibly. These rights are sometimes referred to as 'freedom to roam'.”

This is a peninsula on Loch Bracadale which has no inhabitants beyond a certain point. It is a glorious place in which to roam. The paths you can see were made by sheep.

When Scottish legislation on public ‘freedom to roam’ changed in 2003, it marked the moment that the hills, valleys, moors and waters of Scotland became open to anyone who wanted to explore them. Made for purposes of both recreation and education, as well as to give the public rights to make overland journeys, the Act was at once a nod to ancient traditions and an outlook to the future. As a result, walkers in search of adventure now have more access to nature in Scotland than they do anywhere else in the UK, as well as the scenery to accompany it. We (Brodie and I) leave nothing behind and take nothing away. I don’t usually come to this bit of the island as there are usually sheep here. There are none at present.

I have a friend who is pretty much a #Republican by default (i.e., he claims to be apolitical but only consistently avoids political topics when the Republican position is the status quo; he will comment on other issues). He might be trying out a new "open mindedness" thing, though, and he once even claimed to be "more or less an #Anarchist" at heart.

I'm making a list of #questions to ask him about #anarchy. They were significantly more provocative until my partner (who is very good at this kind of thing) offered some rewordings:

Anarchy questions

  • How do you feel about the unrestricted movement of people? (i.e., #OpenBorders)

  • What are your thoughts on loving relationships (romantic/sexual) with multiple partners (i.e., more than 2), where everyone consents, up to and including marriage? (i.e., #polyamory, #RelationshipAnarchy, etc.)

  • How would you feel about your children having an equal voice in their education, along with all other individuals that are a part of their school around decisions like hours of operation, topics taught, hiring, etc.? (i.e., #AlternativeSchools, #AlternativeEducation)

  • What are your thoughts about individual police accountability when officers break laws?

  • What is your cost/benefit analysis of the existence of #police?

  • What is your cost/benefit analysis of the existence and/or current implementation of #prisons?

  • What are your thoughts on people inhabiting abandoned houses they don't own? (i.e., #squatting)

  • What do you think about #RightToRoam (i.e., even private land should allow people to freely pass through, temporarily camp, etc.)?

Notes:

  • I'm purposefully staying away from questions about capitalism, socialism, or other economic systems; I think his brain would just shut down.
  • Same with LGBTQIA+ issues; he's LDS (and devout), so that will run directly into current doctrine/practice/programming and end the discussion.
  • I'm just sharing this to share; I don't need feedback or suggestions but am open to them.
  • I do not believe I can call myself an anarchist. I resonate strongly with many anarchist principles but I don't walk the walk and there are some issues I'm not totally comfortable with.
