I definitely scribbled this fast to get it turned in, but it was fun, and maybe i can improve on it later.

Three googly-eyed black birds flap away fearfully from a pouncing cat, which has scary red eyes. Behind them is a marsh, with a black moon (or sun?) in the white sky

Day 8, Organically-based Technology

I know it isn't, it's just a boombox with moss growing on it haha, but i was reeeeally short on time, so here we are

From today at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. I didn't see any of the larger birds that are supposed to be migrating at the moment, apparently it was a lot busier earlier this week. I did still catch a few pretty birds though.

More feeder birds. Read ALT descriptions for details. The next 3 days are supposed to be stormy and rainy, so there will be more birds coming to the feeders. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #birdphotography #nature #HoosierMast #woodpeckers #grosbeaks #cowbirds

This red headed fellow (or lady) with the white chest and belly and black with white wings is a red-headed woodpecker. Despite being common in the past, they are not common now and don't often come to feeders, so I'm happy that they come to mine in the spring when they are feeding young.Compared to the flashy male rose breasted grosbeak who is red, black and white, the female is a muted brown and beige. She has the same big eyes and pink nut-cracking beak, though. The males are easy to spot, the females are not so much. I found this one on the ground, waiting for the males above her on the feeder to toss down seeds. This male pileated woodpecker is ready for his closeup. With his red crest, red mustache and loony laugh, he looks and sounds like Woody Woodpecker. He's pretty big, too, bigger than a crow. This plain brown bird with the dark brown beak is often mistaken for all sorts of other birds. It's a female cowbird and it lays its eggs in other birds' nests, leaving them to rear its young. I have always wondered how baby cowbirds know they are cowbirds if they have never seen or interacted with their cowbirds prior to fledging.

Why Doesn’t Fewer Cowbirds Mean Less Nest Parasitism? wilsonsociety.org/2024/02/07/g

"When #cowbird abundance declines, such as is occurring in the #OkanaganValley and throughout much of North America, a sort of 'competitive release' could occur, where individual female #cowbirds may be free to maintain larger egg-laying territories and to parasitize more nests."

I don't know if it's because I'm outside at different times of the day or if there really are more here. I'm not used to seeing them.

As in other breeding behaviours, there are pros and cons to being a brood parasite (laying eggs in the nest of other birds).

"While it may seem underhanded of cowbirds to parasitize other birds [...] it’s not all roses for the cowbirds either — about 97% of cowbird eggs and nestlings don’t reach adulthood. No one has it easy out there."
