The only correct date format to use in strings or file names is %Y%m%d because it is the only format that will sort in proper date order. You can put dashes or period in there if you want, as long as you are consistent.
Any other format will sort weird and is, therefore, more trouble than it is worth.
Edit: As many have pointed out, it's even a standard, y'all.

I’m happily ensconced in a lifetime relationship with my future hubs and our kiddo, but if I was making an online personal ad in 2023, it would include “must observe ISO 8601 convention on recording dates.”

I guess I should've suggested #ISO8601 as well, but I guess most players would expect the format to be displayed in their usual #locale.
