It's sad how corporate values are being dragged through the mud in the US, and managers are following the fascist dictator. Companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon have lost all credibility in my eyes. For me, that's a clear reason to go ahead with #deApple.

#Immich was a bit of a pain-in-the-ass to set up, mostly due to me having photos going back 30+ years in a horrible state of metadata disarray due to missing/wacky EXIF, but it's already paying dividends!

Finally got my iCloud subscription cancelled thanks to #GrapheneOS, #Syncthing, and #Photoprism. My photo library is now stored 100% locally and is properly backed up. Entering 2026 with paying zero to Apple or Google.

Hokey Smokes Bullwinkle, I came pleasantly close to making back the money spent on my #DeApple experiment. I learned a lot.

tl;dr - the amount of lifespan needed to bridge all the UX gaps was too high a price for me. That’s lost, but at least the hardware costs are turning out slightly less punishing.

Looking back at my taking-way-too-long migration from big tech companies, I am realizing my delays are from having to interface with my family, both immediate and extended.

Were this just about me, this transition would have taken less than a week. Here we are over a year in, and between hardware failures and toddlers needing to communicate and coordinate with geriatric parents, this is a pain in the ass.

I have so much stuff sprawled across so many services and data strewn about my home.

Vendor lock in is real.
