A Birthday Party Nearby and Good Sleep Before Cycling

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Sunday I want to do a bike ride that I have been thinking of doing for months, at this point. It's an 81km loop that begins in Nyon and ends in Nyon, going via Montricher. The challenge with this ride is that it has 1100m of climbing.

A Slight Let Down

My looking forward to this bike ride is tainted by the news that some alcoholics will have a party from 13:00 onwards in a house/apartment nearby. By law the alcoholics need to stop making noise by 22:00, but the likelihood they will, once drunk is very low.

A Backup Sleeping Solution

It would be easy to move from the primary bedroom to the backup bedroom that night, but it's the principle of the thing that bothers me.

The Uni Student Solution

When I was at uni, and people were noisy my solution was simple. I went to the student bar until closing time every night. If I went to sleep after the noisy people, then they wouldn't keep me awake.

With age that option is less appealing. With age I want to go to sleep by midnight. With age if I miss sleep it takes longer to recover. If we stayed forever young I would just Netflix and chill, or YouTube and chill until they go to sleep, and then I would finally do the same.

Decent So Far

It's easy to panic, when you see that a party is planned, but these neighbours tend to go indoors quite early and then I regain my private sphere. With luck I will have a normal night of sleep and be fresh for cycling the next day. If I force myself to be optimistic I will be able to have a great night of sleep, especially if I keep my caffeine habit under control.

The Bike Ride

I plan to Cycle with the Le Cerle No Pressure Club from Nyon towards Montricher, before turning towards the lake, before heading back to Nyon via the vineyards and fields. The ride should be pleasant. I was planning to do this ride solo but I hope forward to doing it with a group with some familiar people.

A Social Ride From Start to Finish

A few days ago I went on a group ride that was around 40km and I did another 48 kilometres in solitude. This time I will be riding 88 kilometres with the group and around 4-6 kilometres in solitude. I like when group rides begin and end near where I live because then I am, in theory, as tired as those I am riding with.

And Finally

Due to heavy rain seeing the Thursday evening ride cancelled, and due to not riding today or tomorrow I should be especially well rested for Sunday's ride, if I get to sleep properly. I hope that I do.

I look forward to riding with a different group than usual once again.

"The average #carbonfootprint of households living in the centre of large, population-dense #urban #cities is about 50 percent below average, while households in distant #suburbs are up to twice the average... [and] wipes out any benefits [of] #densification. The costs to #municipalities and #taxpayers for all [these] #infrastructure investments and #maintenance is not factored into the equation either. The Canada Urban Institute estimates the infrastructure cost for each home at over $100,000."

NIMBYism is pushing back against municipalities who are pursuing densification. We have to move on from the antiquated community plans that many city neighborhoods still adhere to #densification #cities #NIMBY #Canada #urbanplanning

"In September of 2023, Calgary City Council adopted a Housing Strategy, which included a controversial proposal for citywide rezoning so buildings like townhouses & row houses will be allowed on any residential lot. As Climate advocates, we love a plan for urban #densification"

Today on the podcast, @arielkroon talks to Melissa Bowman, cofounder of the group Waterloo Region Yes In My Backyard (WRYIMBY) about what a YIMBY group is, what some actions are that it might take, the issues that it might address, and how to start up a YIMBY group in your area, if there’s not one already!

@BlueWall and only now are states out west taking this disaster seriously with zoning reform, but only as the housing crisis sends people into tent camps or fleeing in Uhauls and sprawl meets increasing wildfires. Will the Great Lakes take this seriously? Will the Northeast? Their values are at stake.

#Densification and alternative transit in the North and West will save blue state values in the longer term. Democratization is not enough. #YIMBY #PackSwingStates #p2 #uspol

A tale of two greens. While the #ontario Green Party is pushing for upzoning and #densification , in BC the Greens are hell bent in opposing these reforms, opting to pander to #nimby voters.

« Vous l’avez souvent entendu: "La densité peut prendre plusieurs formes". Et si au lieu de chercher LA bonne forme pour chaque milieu, on s’intéressait davantage à leur diversité?

Entre la maison isolée et les grandes tours d’habitation, il existe un éventail résidentiel sous-exploité pourtant plein de potentiel. »

@KiffinEileen An effective way to keep low taxes without harming services is to increase density.

One cannot reasonably have low density and low taxes while expecting any services to remain.

@inaforest @helenczerski Public housing from mass redevelopment & #densification projects that are decades overdue, among others.

There's a *lot* of wasted space in cities in both USA & Canada (Europe has very different causes & mechanisms involved in its housing crises than just astonishingly bad land-use).

Just look at how much of the cities are either zoned for single-family homes or #parking (i.e. complete and utter waste of urban space).
