Framework Laptop 16 DIY OCuLink x8 expansion module brings desktop GPU support to the modular laptop

The Framework Laptop 16 is a modular laptop computer with support for user-replaceable memory and storage, support for up to 6 expansion cards that let you choose your own ports (or other features), and even a removable, replaceable mainboard.

It’s also Framework’s first laptop with an expansion bay that lets you add an optional discrete GPU. When the Framework Laptop 16 started shipping in […]

Framework launches a Dual M.2 Adapter for the Framework Laptop 16

The Framework Laptop 16 is a notebook computer with a modular design. Like Framework’s original 13 inch laptop, the 16 inch model that launched in 2023 uses an Expansion Card system to let users choose and arrange the laptop’s ports, a chassis that’s easy to open, and a motherboard that’s designed to be replaceable.

But new with the Framework Laptop 16 is an Expansion Bay near the back of the computer. You can use that bay to add an AMD Radeon RX 7700S discrete GPU. But there’s also an Expansion Bay Shell that can be used to add other hardware to the laptop. It’s just that up until now there weren’t any modules that fit into that shell. Now there is.

Framework’s new Dual M.2 Adapter is a small board that allows you to add two more M.2 2230/2242/2260/2280 modules to a Framework Laptop 16. Among other things, this lets you give the laptop up to 16TB of additional PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe storage. You could also use it for an AI accelerator or use an M.2 to PCIe adapter for an external connection to a desktop graphics card.

The module can be installed into the Expansion Bay, where it fits between two fans. While the module itself sells for $39, Framework notes that you’ll also need a $29 Framework Laptop 16 Graphics Module Interposer in order to install it, which means the total cost is $68 + the price of whatever SSDs or other M.2 modules you plan to add.

Still, it’s highly unusual for a laptop maker to officially provide any way to add more M.2 ports to an existing laptop, so the fact that this thing exists at all is pretty impressive.

I'm now a little over a month into my migration from macOS to Linux with a Framework Laptop 16. I've written up some of the tweaks and mods that I've done to the Framework laptop, Fedora and just thoughts on life using Linux on my daily driver.

@RueNahcMohr I've had good luck in building #FreeBSD from source. Though generally up until now I've pretty much only been building/re-building STABLE releases. Since support for the #frameworklaptop16 is new, I have been expecting issues in the ports directory.

That said, big chunks have been building just fine. My second issue surfaced in the linux_compat package.

So far it mostly looks like the port description/dependencies haven't been checked/updated yet for 15.0.

Well successfully got the current snapshot of #FreeBSD (15-CURRENT) installed on the #frameworklaptop16 thanks to the FreeBSD folks for adding the quirks needed to do that.

I had forgotten what its like on a machine without the ports built so I thought "Let's build /usr/ports" and MAN is this thing fast.

Question for people with #framework laptops - I have Windows 11 (groan) installed on the SSD, and it’s set up with VeraCrypt on the entire SSD.

If I get a 500GB USB-C hard drive expansion module, could I load Linux on that and hammer a function key during boot to tell the laptop to boot from the Linux OS on the little expansion SSD?

Any tips would be appreciated. #FrameworkLaptop #frameworklaptop16

I now have Fn + Caps Lock set to be Scroll Lock on my Framework Laptop 16 so that I can map that to be a Compose key in KDE.

If there is one thing that I've missed when moving from macOS to Linux is how easy it was to type in accented characters or alternate letter forms (say đ vs d).

Now, with an actual Compose key simulacra, I now have that in KDE Plasma 🎉

So, I think I'm gonna give up using the Framework Audio Expansion Card for general use due to problems with various applications unable to pick up on the headset microphone side of the connection.

I picked up a UGREEN USB-C to 3.5mm cable and it was picked up automatically by KDE, Zoom and Audacity.

I also picked up an Anker version of the cable and it also worked just fine.

If I really do care about listening to high-resolution music on my Framework laptop, I can use my FiiO portable USB DAC.

I've published the various tweaks and mods to making the transition from macOS to Fedora on the Framework Laptop a little bit easier for me.

EasyEffects and a laptop audio profile has really helped improved the perceived sound quality that comes out of the... checks notes... side-firing speakers.

Framework open sources the 3D CAD design files for its modular laptops

Framework makes laptops that feature a modular, repairable, and upgradeable design. All of the company’s laptops have motherboards that can be removed and replaced with newer models, as well as a modular port system that leverages USB-C connectors on the mainboard to let you decide which ports you want and where to put them.
The Framework […]

Framework Laptop 16 reviews are in, and the general consensus is that this is an incredibly ambitious project: it's the most modular, customizable, repairable, and upgradeable laptop to date, with a 16 inch display, customizable ports, input, and internals... plus an expansion bay for an optional discrete GPU. But it's expensive, noisy under load, and not the best gaming laptop available. It's tougher to recommend than Framework's 13.5 inch laptops. #FrameworkLaptop16
