Gamma-ray burst charged Earth’s ionosphere from 2 billion light-years away
"The brightest supernova ever detected altered the outer layers of Earth's atmosphere."

Exciting: A faint gamma-ray burst occurred 11.5 seconds after one of the two gravitational-wave candidates (S241125n), and from a consistent sky position.

This is interesting because no electromagnetic signals are expected from the black hole mergers that detectors like @LIGO observe in gravitational waves. However, there are theoretical considerations that suggest this might be possible.

A purely coincidental joint occurrence of this kind is only expected to happen once in about 100 years of observing time.

An article published in the journal "Nature Astronomy" reports a study on the gamma-ray burst cataloged as GRB221009A, the brightest ever detected, which confirms that it was caused by the collapse of a massive star, which subsequently exploded in a supernova.

An article published in the journal "Nature" reports the detection of heavy elements including tellurium ejected from a kilonova, the merger between two neutron stars. A team of researchers started from the gamma-ray burst cataloged as GRB 230307A to examine data collected by ground-based and space telescopes which made it possible to identify the characteristics of a kilonova at the origin of that explosion.

What's the Link Between Gamma Ray Bursts and Supernovae? It Might Be Binary Stars

Long gamma-ray busts defy comprehension. In just a few seconds, these explosions can release more gamma rays than the collective radiation from all the stars in the observable Universe. Astronomers are still trying to understand what can cause a gamma-ray burst to detonate with so much energy. They appear to be a type of supernova explosion where a massive star detonates. Since most massive stars belong to binary star systems, most of these objects probably started orbiting another star. Does this binary relationship have something to do with the strength of the explosion?
