I finally got back to this piece, wrote some convoluted code, and came up with this. Opinions/advice on the code are especially welcome. Code here: gitlab.com/mitten-la/py5-sketc 2/x

I started working on the prompt for Genuary day 6, and got quite stuck code-wise. What I thought would be easy wasn’t. Then a large chunk of LA was on fire, and I got a bit distracted. 1/x

"Make a landscape using only primitive shapes" and "Subdivision."

Ye olde fractal tree. Clouds in the sky are made up of nothing but lots of circles.

This was partly inspired by one of my favorite photographs I've taken in real life. I definitely paid more attention to the sky than to the tree, both in the photograph and with this sketch here.

Genuary 13: Triangles and nothing else. (belated)

Another landscape generator, that only draws triangles, but this time they're so thin (and closely aligned, or so thoroughly rotated) that they become something else. This generator also echoes my entry for Genuary 6, and could have been an answer to that prompt.

An ethereal digital landscape with a pale grey sky and blue icy mountains, all under a black sun that looks like an eye in the sky. This is an evolution of my "42 lines of code" entry from Jan 3rd. This one's well over 200 lines of code.

#Genuary6 prompt: Make a landscape using only primitive shapes.
openprocessing.org/sketch/2501

I was inspired by @ronikaufman's sketch to try sampling pixels from a landscape/skyscape photograph, something I had been wanting to do for a while. It turned out well, and it has given me some ideas for other experiments in this vein. This one has an animation mode, to meet the #WCCChallenge topic of "wind".

#Genuary2025 #CreativeCoding #GenerativeArt #AlgorithmicArt

The base image is a pink and blue-grey sunset framed by a maple and a pine tree in silhouette. Here only 3% of the pixels are sampled, so the shapes are very obvious and the reference image is fairly obscured. When the brightness of the sampled pixel is below 12%, it places a pair of scaled rhombuses, and when above, it places a scaled circle (i.e. an ellipse). The wind animation effect, which you can test in the sketch I linked to in the post, causes these shapes to be rotated by a smooth noise function based on their x and y coordinates and a time variable. The framerate is reduced to help it run better, but it will still run faster on smaller resolutions for the overall window, and the sampling percentage. The sampling percentage is increased to 7, and the image becomes a bit finer, though the jagged or blobby nature is still present. The shapes are fairly transparent and overlap a fair bit, giving it the look of an image taken with a very shallow depth of field, with a strong bokeh effect. The sampling percentage is increased to 13, and the image becomes much finer, and starts to look like a slightly blurred and filtered version of the base image. The sampling percentage is increased to 19, and the image becomes finer yet, and looks even more like a slightly blurred version of the base image. Due to the shapes being scaled up and overlapping a fair bit, it will never fully match the picture, even at 100%. If an unscaled, unrotated square was chosen that matched the full size of the increment, it would just be a simple pixelated image, and would perfectly match the source image at 100%.

here's one using points (and motion blur).

Prompt: Make a landscape using only primitive shapes. This is all rectangles. See it render in about 2 seconds at beta.dwitter.net/d/33044 #genuary #genuary2025 #genuary6

Abstract landscape-like image, in landscape format. The bottom third consists of green rectangular shapes that look somewhat like reeds, rising near the center. The top two-thirds has an orange cloud-like region with splotches of gray, surrounded by pink-purple.

#genuary6 - Make a landscape using only primitive shapes. The sky is made of only circles, and the ground only vertical lines. Using transparency and different color shades turns it into a landscape that kind of reminds me of a Bob Ross painting. Or maybe the Windows XP wallpaper. #genuary #genuary2025

Abstract landscape of a rolling grassland and partly-cloudy sky above, all made from basic circles and lines.

I've only recently started playing around with WebGL or 3d graphics in general really, so this is pretty crude
