In the previous election in 2023 the PVV finished first in a landslide, but the ensuing government, in which it was the biggest party, was a dysfunctional mess.
D66 is the PVV’s polar opposite: a pro-European, technocratic party supported mainly by highly-educated urbanites.
It turns out that beating the hard right is not so simple; but smiling helps.

BERLIN — "Past German governments sought to temper Europe’s most hardline impulses on migration. Now, under Chancellor #FriedrichMerz, Berlin is vying to lead Europe’s anti-immigration charge.
"The stark shift in Germany’s migration stance under its new government promises to accelerate the EU’s #HardRight turn on migration as the bloc prepares to implement a series of new measures aimed at drastically reducing the number of asylum seekers entering Europe — and #deporting more of those who do make it. As European leaders negotiate on how to put these measures into place, those from some of the EU’s most hardline countries are welcoming Germany’s new role.
" 'Germany is leading in some of these very important talks,' Kaare Dybvad, #Denmark’s immigration minister, told POLITICO. 'We’re happy about that.'
"In a highly symbolic example of how Germany’s government is now seeking to propel Europe’s migration shift rather than moderate it, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt recently hosted counterparts from several European countries with tough migration stances — including #Austria, Denmark and #Poland — on his country’s highest mountain in the Bavarian Alps, the Zugspitze, adorned at its summit with a golden cross.
" 'We want to make it clear that Germany is no longer in the brakeman’s cab when it comes to migration issues in Europe but is part of the driving force,' Dobrindt said at an elevation of nearly 3,000 meters.

I was active in direct democracy movements during Occupy times: Mostly taken over by nazis.
Was an active psytrance organiser: Hippies were already conspiracists, but Pandemic turned them antivaxxers and pseudo-eugenists.
Pirate party was good while it lasted, but even that is mostly taken over by libertarians now.
It's lonely these days, I have to say. #HardRight sucked in most people I used to consider friends. 😢

PARIS (AP) — "French union leaders condemned the “#Trumpization” of world politics, while in Italy, #MayDay protesters paraded a puppet of the American president through the streets of Turin.
"Across continents, tens of thousands turned out for Thursday’s rallies marking International Workers’ Day, many citing President Donald Trump’s agenda — from aggressive tariffs spurring fears of global economic turmoil to immigration crackdowns — as a central concern.
"In the United States, organizers said this year’s protests aimed to push back against efforts to roll back protections for immigrants, federal workers and diversity initiatives.
"In #Germany, union leaders warned that extended workdays and rising #AntiImmigrant sentiment were dismantling labor protections. And in Bern, #Switzerland, thousands marched behind banners denouncing #fascism and war — part of a wider backlash against the global surge of #HardRight politics.
"In #Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te referenced new U.S. tariffs under Trump as he promoted a proposed spending bill aimed at stabilizing the job market and supporting livelihoods. In the #Philippines, protest leader Mong Palatino warned that 'tariff wars and policies of Trump' threatened local industries.
