Ended the week and started the first weekend of the year after a ride on which I saw my first kingfisher of the year with Tranquility an album by American jazz saxophonist Lee Konitz's Quartet recorded in 1957 and released on the Verve label

Jason Ankeny of Allmusic states "crafted with startling precision and economy, Tranquility extols the virtues of mood and shape with Talmudic zeal, towering astride thought and expression. ...Rarely is music so profoundly cerebral also so deeply heartfelt" - Wikipedia

Conquistador! is a 1968 studio album recorded in 1966 by free jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, released by Blue Note Records.

The authors of The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album 4 stars, calling it "an all but flawless record," and commenting: "Dark, difficult, unique, yet operating at an artful tangent to some of the other 'difficult' Blue Note music of the period, this is Taylor at his most devious."

Writing for Vinyl Me Please, Brian Josephs stated: "Conquistador!... swerves away from Unit Structures' fire and evokes the coolness of its cover, which features a turtlenecked Taylor slightly out of focus, hiding behind shades as he mysteriously stares into the distance. The musical elements don’t combust as much as they melt into each other.." - Wikipedia

Funk Dumpling by Perry Robinson 4, released on Savoy in 1962.

Funk Dumpling Review by Scott Yanow

Clarinetist Perry Robinson has recorded relatively few sessions as a leader during his career. In fact, this album, last available as a 1987 reissue LP, was his only chance to head his own recording date prior to 1975. Robinson is joined by pianist Kenny Barron (on one of his earliest recordings), bassist Henry Grimes, and drummer Paul Motian for seven originals -- four by the clarinetist and three by the long-lost Grimes. In general, the music is warm, lyrical, and thoughtful, although Robinson proved at this point to already be a pretty adventurous player. Collectors of early creative jazz will want this set.

Symphony for Improvisers is an album by American jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, released by Blue Note Records in August 1967. It features Gato Barbieri, Henry Grimes, and Ed Blackwell, all of whom appeared on Cherry's previous album Complete Communion, along with Karl Berger, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, and Pharoah Sanders. Symphony for Improvisers was recorded in 1966. The front cover photograph was taken at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Upper West Side, New York City.

Ollie Bivens, writing for All About Jazz, commented: "Symphony for Improvisers is a lesson in controlled chaos that remains eminently musical... This music is cerebral without being cold, freewheeling without degenerating into a lot of blowing for the sake of blowing. Never boring, Symphony for Improvisers is for jazz fans with lengthy attention spans and open ears." - Wikipedia

Where Is Brooklyn? is an album by Don Cherry featuring Henry Grimes, Ed Blackwell, and Pharoah Sanders recorded in 1966 and released on the Blue Note label.

The authors of The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings called the album "a great piece of work," and commented: "Though it seems to go back to the less adventurous format of Complete Communion and to focus on discrete compositions rather than flowing improvisation, it has enough detail and enough thoughtful energy stashed away in each track... to create the same feel." - Wikipedia

Complete Communion is a 1966 album by American jazz composer Don Cherry, his debut as a bandleader and his first release on Blue Note Records.

Each side of the original LP were suites, side-long compositions[2] working with several themes. Critics have proposed this recording as an important innovation in the free jazz of the time, introducing "an alternative both to athematic improvising and to monothematic pieces". - Wikipedia

The Call is an album by bassist Henry Grimes. It was recorded in December 1965 in New York City, and was released by the ESP-Disk label in 1966. On the album, Grimes is joined by clarinetist Perry Robinson and drummer Tom Price. - Wikipedia

"...For The Call Grimes teamed with highly original clarinetist Perry Robinson ...and stalwart drummer/ESP-Disk' regular Tom Price. As a bassist, Grimes's melodic style is well up to the task of being co-equal voice with a horn, resulting in a thoughtful and texturally rewarding LP with a level of quality far above the rote sideman session cliche, and far away from equally cliched ideas of unrelentingly full-bore free jazz. It offers the sound of three excellent musicians listening to each other and responding superbly." Bandcamp

“Again though, a recording has to speak to me. I’m not looking to chase down just any tape. It’s gotta hit a nerve. Just because I get to be a kid in a candy store doesn’t mean all that candy gets eaten or shown to the public. We must be guardians. We have to be the keepers of the flame. We need to look out for the best for these artists and their legacies. Especially when they’re not here to defend themselves. The project has to do something to complement their legacy, or we’re not going to put it out. ” - Zev Feldman

Unit Structures is a studio album by American jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, released in October 1966 by Blue Note Records.

According to Jesse Jarnow of Pitchfork: "The album is by no means easy listening; the atonality is unrepentant. But Taylor’s septet finds numerous gorgeous spaces as they interpret “free jazz” not just as the freedom to improvise but the freedom to invent musical worlds and hidden syntaxes. The only way to tap into the 'rhythm-sound energy found in the amplitude of each time unit,' as Taylor wrote in the liner notes, is to listen reverently...
..."Unit Structures still challenges notions of musical freedom. Recorded during the same season that the psychedelic ballroom scene was starting to bubble in San Francisco, Unit Structures did more to disassemble music than nearly all of the light-show-drenched psychedelia that followed."
