If we assemble passenger transport modes into a hierarchy, ordered by speed and distance covered (e.g., air travel at the top, long distance high speed trains below, then regional trains, urban rail, subway, tram, cycling, walking), then the rule should be that in any multimodal trip we should only need to ascend, then descend the hierarchy.

Having to walk between train stations to transfer, or not having high speed rail directly at the airport violates this rule.

Was cleaning up my .bash_aliases file and noticed that I have accumulated ~150 aliased commands & only about 20 functions. Most are just replacing a default command with flags & options. Some are 4 or 5 chained together.

My muscle-memory & daily workflow is made up of all kinds of convoluted mnemonics in a kind of bash-pidgin dialect.

Be a real shame if something happened to this nice file.🤔

The motherless children, at least all those born my mother in the 60's, are gathering in Austin, at Lake Travis for the solar eclipse. The 3 of us born in the 50's, similarly motherless, will not be in attendance. Funny how families evolve, or not? Momma's last words to me were "Don't fight." Reproachful to the end, I'm afraid. And it will be cloudy and rainy for the eclipse, so now the reproach takes on a celestial aura? Oh, Mama , can this really be the end?

Been thinking about software bloat (and Zawinski's law), particularly with browsers, and had an idea.

The promise of add-ons was that we could have a lean core and then whatever additional functionality we wanted could be customised. In reality, most users probably have 1-2 add-ons and we can't expect most people to trawl through software repositories just trying to get their browser to do what they would consider to be "simple stuff".

But what if browsers were more like distros? No one expects Linux, GNU/Linux, or even say Debian to meet the needs of most users as-is or for most users to select all the various software packages necessary to bring it up to that they need.

We could have a Gecko/Firefox core and then different browser distros could select a set of add-ons that make it functional in a particular way. That way, each browser distro could make sure that the set of add-ons worked together and met the needs of their particular user base.

And in Linux land, Linux distros could include their particular browser distro tailored to their intended audience.

I have a test to help determine a person's social status: can you imagine them folding laundry? Hauling a hamper of clean clothes from the dryer or from the line, folding it, and stowing it in drawers and on hangers? I don't do anything with the info. Just an interesting mental exercise.

I was thinking, does every programming language, API or SDK etc. have at least one book that "everyone" knows or understands which book is meant by something other than its given title?

I'm thinking K&R, Stroustrup, Petzold, the camel book.

I guess Petzold isn't a great example as the book people think of would vary by generation (for me it's Programming Windows 3rd edition), although I suppose it's still ostensibly about the same thing.
