After many sightings of egg masses and nymphs in all stages, this is the first adult #lanternfly I’ve seen in my garden.

an adult spotted lanternfly sits on a stem of gladiola buds. The insect is gray with dark spots, and underneath the transparent wings you can see a flash of red—very pretty bug that does a lot of damage.

So, I have a friend who is knowledgeable about all forest things, who advised me a few years back about the spotted lantern fly, an invasive species crawling up the USA East Coast decimating forests. I saw the black and white immature version in the Spring. Here's the mature insect, which I saw today. I saw my first #lanternfly ! Iooked it up and went to tell my husband, but he had already pulled the host ailanthus and was taking brush to the dump. So many in our area that Ag. Extension doesn't need more reports of sightings :(
