#lightPollution

2025-07-10

80% of the world population is living under artificially illuminated skies, and it's increasing in brightness and spatial extent. #Rivers and #coastal regions are particular hotspots. Andy Vowles stands in for Matthew Hatfield and tells us that #eel are more active when under artificial light at night. Whereas #trout were less active when exposed to #LightPollution #FSBI2025

"The leading international authority that certifies dark sky parks says the artificial light from #AlligatorAlcatraz 'directly threatens' the preserve’s renowned natural darkness and disrupts endangered #nocturnal #wildlife."

Shitting on lamps is not a very efficient way of fighting light pollution, but this stork is doing what it can.

There's an industry in the UK pushing a tourism-led agenda that we have dark skies that make them worthy of recognition.

It relies on chutzpah rather than hard work tackling light pollution.

Lines are drawn around places like Eryri ('Snowdonia') that are dark relative to, say, a town and declared "truly dark" and "pristine".

But these areas are blighted by 'imported' light pollution, as this shot from Anglesey, looking to the N and NE this morning, clearly shows.

ISO400, 30s exposure broadly reproducing the dark-adapted, visual scene of 'imported' light pollution from far afield affecting north Wales. The Eryri range is clearly seen as silhouetted by reflected light pollution whilst the reflected lights of Liverpool and NW England dominated the left of the image.

New instance, new #introduction post!

The time has come for me to move on to this instance much more in line with my interests.
Gone are the many messages that I posted over the last couple of years, but I'm happy to have found a new, more like-minded community to compensate for this migration side effect.

You will find me sharing mostly #LandscapePhotography, #NightPhotography, #MacroPhotography and #BirdPhotography.

I am also interested in #astronomy and #LightPollution.

Below are a few of my landscape photos.

This is in the Black Forest, a large forested mountain range in southwest Germany. The Old Man of Storr, a 55-meter-high basalt pinnacle, on a sunny day with a few clouds, looking out to sea over an island and then beyond to shores and mountains.
A small group of hikers can be seen at the bottom of the photo, giving a better idea of the scale.

Among people who live in #port cities in the #UK, "light pollution appears to be the lowest priority, with only four cities saying it is a very important issue." Furthermore, "ports are least likely to receive complaints about soil and light pollution, as well as invasive species, with the majority of the sample stating they never receive these complaints."

In order to fully understand how #LightPollution affects our world, we need to know how much of it is in which places. Divergent results from different measurement methods present some tension, but recent research suggests a way forward.

"Recent research shows the night sky in #NorthAmerica is getting brighter every year – on average, researchers say, you can see about 10 percent fewer stars than the year before. But the #BigBend area in #Texas has fended off the light glow that washes out starry nights."

New publication: Intensity and colour of artificial light at night affect insect attraction in a taxon-dependent manner. #biodiversity #lightpollution #ALAN #artificiallightatnight
doi.org/10.1111/icad.12855

Figure 1 in Charvalakis et al. (2025): "Experimental design; 2 × 12 light traps (fitted with four differently coloured LEDs with three intensities) were placed at each side of a forest road. The order of light colour and intensity was randomized within each roadside. Insect trapping was done during 11 non-consecutive nights (minimally one night in between) during July and September."

@frankobert Darum ist es u.a. so wichtig, sich gegen Lichtverschmutzung einzusetzen. Sonst ist (nicht nur) die Milchstraße bald nirgends mehr zu sehen.

β€œWe used a stratified survey to explore the impact of residing in regions with different sky brightness levels on the perception of anthropogenic light. Brightness levels were perceived as satisfactory, despite most recognising negative impacts. Respondents who lived or grew up in high-sky brightness regions were more likely to feel unsafe and to perceive anthropogenic light as beneficial for nature and health. Support for technological mitigation measures and awareness campaigns was high, but support for shorter illumination time was higher in areas with lower sky brightness.”

This also suggests that artificial skyglow (a form of light pollution) is almost certainly a source of evolutionary pressure.

If you care about #Biodiversity, if you care about #GlobalChange, or if you care about #Sustainability, you should care about #LightPollution.

It's the stupidest form of #pollution, and the easiest to fix.

Two fisheye images of the night sky by Andreas Jechow. On the left is a location several tens of kilometers from Berlin. The sky is relatively dark overhead and you can see the Milky Way, but the horizon is still quite bright. On the right is an image taken in front of Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom). The sky is a bright blue-white color, and far fewer stars are visible.Image of a staircase with terribly bright glaring lights.Image of a staircase that is very well lit with an amount of light that fits well with the surroundings.

Reminder: my #LPS25 talk is tomorrow - literally the last talk of the conference.

But I promise it's going to be entertaining and you'll leave on a high note! Here's a sneak peak...

Text says Aotearoa (New Zealand) by starlight and airglow. 7 years cloud-free, moon-free data from VIIRS DNB. Equivalent exposure ~1s. Processing by Helga Kuechly.

Image shows a satellite view of Aotearoa at night with no clouds. The cities are shining brightly, and you can clearly make out the albedo differences at the land-water boundary, as well as the bright reflection from glaciers.

At #LPS25 the #Sentinel2 team just said that they will support nighttime observations in Sentinel 2NG.

My understanding was that this was expected to be impossible with the existing architecture, so I'm very curious to hear more!
