After some explaining of copyright and licensing, I finally got the field names for the townland of Ballyreddy in Co. Kilkenny from the person who had surveyed them years ago, including some name:etymology. I especially love the Snipe Bog, named after the bird, and the Watery Lane which I only got after following up with him, bc the field is called "Watery Lane Field". Growing up outside of Ireland, hearing place-names, and later learning the assumptions were totally wrong:
- Longford is nowhere near Wexford and Waterford
- Claregalway is not a town between Clare & Galway

Do any of the #gaeilgeori have an idea what the meaning of Arregcrehan for a standing/ boundary stone could be? It's mentioned in a 1580s-90s document for Co. Kilkenny. The -crehan bit is part of another place name in the same text (Knockcrehan). The text itself is in English. Can anyone of the #logainm and/or Gaelgeorí crowd explain the etymology of the barra part in "Barra an Teampaill" to me? It means "street", if I'm not mistaken, but is it a special type of street? I found references to Castlebarre, Walkynsbarre and Sayn Jons Barre in 14th century Kilkenny. They all led to town gates, just wondering whether that's the special meaning of them. #placenames #gaeilge

I'm left wondering if there's a connection between something I think I found (and lost track of) suggesting it was a grazing term and or connected to 'gabhar' for 'goat', (cognate with 'cabra' for the same in most romance languages) ie 'Gabhrach' at other points in time.

But honestly I can't see anything more than speculation/conjecture that I'm doing here and that's no way to do things.

Really though, this has bothered me for a bit, I can find no actual sourcing with any context or etymology or proof that points to Cabrach meaning 'the poor land', just administrative documentation with attestations that it does, for both these places, other locations in Ireland and another in Scotland.

The modern Irish word 'cabrach' can it seems mean either 'poles/rafters' or 'copse'.
