Cover of the journal: A flower color locus that underlies pollinator-mediated speciation in monkeyflowers (Mimulus) produces regulatory small RNAs that suppress the accumulation of yellow carotenoid pigments. Variation in the level of these small RNAs through either natural mutations or transgenic manipulation contributes to a great diversity of flower color in Mimulus, as shown in this image.

My first lead-author paper is now up on #Bioarxiv ! We characterized genomic divergence and postmating reproductive isolation in a cute but understudied group of #monkeyflowers ( #Mimulus, aka #Diplacus ) and found strong isolation caused by hybrid seed inviability as well as a case of unilateral postmating prezygotic isolation and some hybrid male sterility. Day 3 brought us to an amazing population of a variety of #Mimulus gracilis that has taken on more radial symmetry and points its flowers towards the sky to attract #pollinators.

Day 2 started out at Taroom, QLD, from which we headed north to look at a site with an old #herbarium record of an interesting variety of #Mimulus gracilis. It was not at the location we were looking for, but then Bill told me to pull over and he immediately found the thing on the side of the road. Here is him being very excited about seeing this plant for the first time in the field.

Felted a #monkeyflower inspired by these adorable happy face phenotypes. Usually there’s only light scattered red dots on #Mimulus guttatus (syn. Erythranthe guttata) but some pops have a stronger red dot... and some individuals look like this!

Hey Mastodon! A brief #introduction of myself. I am a Ph.D. candidate at Tulane University. My work focuses on how #endophytes respond to and are influenced by plant leaf traits in #tropicalforest and in #mimulus #monkeyflowers. Specially how endopytes can alter leaf traits and help plants respond to #herbivore and #pathogens. I've also worked with #ants in coffee #agroecosystems. I'm more and more excited about the possibilities of #data in creating just and equitable spaces. #BoricuainSTEM

My work has focused on lizards and monkeyflowers. Besides research, I like running, hiking, camping, kayaking, climbing, and dabbling in art and crafts.
