Today I was looking at the latest mwmbl source code changes. There I saw that @daoud changed pip for uv. uv is ''an extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust'''.

github.com/astral-sh/uv

Certainly sth worth to have a look at.

@abucci time for web sites to bring back browser wars era badges, but instead of saying "Best viewed with Netscape Navigator" it might say "Best found with Duck Duck Go".... Oh wait, they have an AI "assist" right at the top of their page too. Hmm

"Best found with ${NON_AI_SEARCH_ENGINE}" where NON_AI_SEARCH_ENGINE is one of Start page, Searx, Qwant, Marginalia, Mwmbl...

@jalefkowit Mandatory shout out to #DuckDuckGo duckduckgo.com/ , #StartPage - Private Search Engine. No Tracking. No Search History startpage.com/ , #SearX searx.org/ , and ... Oh oh #Mwmbl mwmbl.org/ is down ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

@MetaGer
Top. Zudem gibt es noch Suchmaschinen mit eigenen kleinen, mittleren und recht groรŸen Indizes (z. B. mwmbl):
#marginalia https://marginalia-search.com/
#stract https://stract.com/
#wiby https://wiby.me/
#YaCy https://yacy.net/
#mwmbl https://mwmbl.org
...

Wie wรคre es mit einer metager-Variante, die nur diese als Metasuche abdeckt?

@marginalia great. I wonder how well are you DIY folks (e.g. #YaCy #mwmbl) connected?

@daoud

The new frontent looks great

Will it also be possible to add language as a ranking parameter?

I've been working on rewriting our ranking algorithm in Rust the last few days! Here's why:

Many thanks for presenting #Mwmbl, @daoud! I was the person asking about Mwmbl's unique indexing approach. I am excited that you pursue this. We tried something similar by cleverly indexing multi-term queries based on this paper by Ivana Podnar and others:

Stats page on the #OpenSource #SearchEngine #Mwmbl is finally fixed. And crawling should be working again.

New version of #Mwmbl #OpenSource #SearchEngine is deployed featuring English Wikipedia search incorporated into our results, as originally suggested by @seddon

#mwmbl - non-profit search engine ๐Ÿ’ป mwmbl is a decentralized, non-profit search engine that helps people find information quickly (it is really fast). It has its own index, which makes it unique!
Users can contribute to the project by installing our crawler as a script or using the Firefox extension:

- https://github.com/mwmbl/crawler-script
- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fox/extension/mwmbl-web-crawler/

mwmbl is an open-source community, and they want everyone's input! ๐Ÿค The developer even considers moving the project from #GitHub to #codeberg.

Users can suggest domains to crawl if they seem legit. And if you have specific sites in mind that wasn't covered by the current index, feel free to add them too! ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Yesterday was a remarkable day for mwmbl - over 23 million URLs were crawled in just one day with only 158 crawlers! ๐Ÿš€ That's a big improvement from the past few weeks. And guess what?

For whatever reason, #GitHub is always at the top of our list when it comes to crawling URLs. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

So, @daoud, how many users can your infrastructure handle? Curious to know more about your project! ๐Ÿค”

I've finally figured out a way to solve the ongoing issue where we had run out of URLs to crawl. Basically, we are now allowed to crawl old URLs, but we prioritise new ones. That's one way to find new URLs since pages don't always stay the same ๐Ÿ˜‚

#Mwmbl #SearchEngine #OpenSource

Two graphs, one showing Number of URLs crawled today, which dropped off a cliff from 14 million to around 1 million almost a month ago.

The second graph shows URLs crawled today by hour, and in the last two hours it has shot up from 40,000 to over 100,000
2024-03-29

We're now tracking how many unique URLs we have in the #Mwmbl #OpenSource #SearchEngine index!

mwmbl.org/stats/

Three graphs showing how many unique URLs (152,104,583), domains (12,315,972) and results (473,344,529) there are in Mwmbl's index.

I've noticed people have been giving a lot of exposure to #stract , but what about #mwmbl ?

Is there a particular reason why Stract is getting so much more focus than Mwmbl? Mwmbl's results feel much more mature from my perspective.

Finally fixed a bug in #Mwmbl that's been annoying users for ages. This kind of bug would never happen with strong typing, but I still love you Python โค๏ธ
