Interesting video, with background of what happened in the 90s when USSR went missing in action. The focus on the fleet of Black Sea. This is probably biased based on the side producing the document but nonetheless very interesting.

HNLMS Sumatra was the second of the Java-class light cruisers built for the Royal Netherlands Navy.

HNLMS Sumatra was the second of the Java-class light cruisers built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Laid down on 15 July 1916, she was not launched until 20 December 1920. Her commissioning did not occur until 26 May 1926 because her intended turbines were destroyed in a fire.

Sumatra spent most of the inter-war years in the Dutch East Indies. In 1938 she returned to the Netherlands. When Germany over-ran the Netherlands, Sumatra left for England. After transporting Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her daughters to Canada, Sumatra undertook convoy escort duties until late 1940. She then left for the Dutch East Indies where she was laid up for an extensive overhaul.

At the start of hostilities with Japan, she was still undergoing the refit but was quickly re-activated and manned mainly by midshipmen, sailed for England. Problems with her propulsion made her unfit for duty and she was laid up in Portsmith. In 1944 she was transferred to the Royal Navy and scuttled off the coast of Normandy on 9 June 1944 at Ouistreham, as part of a gooseberry pier to protect an artificial Mulberry Harbour built by the Allies as part of Operation Overlord.

On 14 February 1951 her wreck was auctioned with other wrecks to be scrapped.

🚢😆 Oh, look! The administration thinks they're building "battleships" because, you know, they're big and float. Who needs guns or armor when you've got a title and a misguided sense of naval history? The closest relative might be a Kirov class, but who cares about accuracy when you can confuse people with grandiose claims? 🤦‍♂️⚓️

25 December 1880:
USS Jeannette is beset in ice northward of Wrangell Island for the second Christmas in a row.

The day's events also show part of the Captain's journal, listing their Christmas menu.
"Our mince pies were a work of art; though they were made from pemmican and flavored by a bottle of brandy"

Text also in Alt description.

The pumping forward is done by hand at the spar deck bilge pump, and such water as filters aft, through and under the bulkhead, into the fire room, is pumped out by hand at the bilge pump attached to the main engine.
The steam cutter's boiler is used for distilling.
Falling barometer and pleasant temperature.
Low red dawn at 9am & bright starlight. At 9pm auroral streaks in N.W. radiating like a fan; at midnight an auroral arch extended from N.W. through zenith to S.E.

Captain’s Journal (vol. 2 p. 496):
The day was made as acceptable as possible fore and aft, by the providing of a good dinner from our resources. And I think we may refer to our bills of fare with pardonable pride. Our mince pies were a work of art; though they were made from pemmican and flavored by a bottle of brandy, they were as delicate to the taste as if compounded from beef fresh from market. Hot whiskey punch in the evening fore and aft brought an agreeable close to our second Christmas in the pack.

HMS Princess Royal was the second of two Lion-class battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy before the First World War. Participated in the Battles of Battle of Dogger Bank and Jutland. destinationsjourney.com/histor #MaritimeHistory #NavalHistory #RoyalNavy #Battlecruiser #battleship #HMSPrincessRoyal

HMS Princess Royal was the second of two Lion-class battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy before the First World War. Designed in response to the Moltke-class battlecruisers of the Imperial German Navy, the ships significantly improved on the speed, armament, and armour of the preceding Indefatigable class. The ship was named after Louise, The Princess Royal, a title occasionally granted to the Monarch's eldest daughter.

Completed in 1913, Princess Royal participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight a month after the start of World War I in August 1914. She was then sent to the Caribbean Sea to prevent the German East Asia Squadron from using the Panama Canal. After the East Asia Squadron was sunk at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, Princess Royal rejoined the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron (BCS). During the Battle of Dogger Bank, the ship scored only a few hits, although one crippled the German armoured cruiser Blücher. Shortly afterward, she became the flagship of the 1st BCS, under the command of Rear-Admiral Osmond Brock.

Princess Royal was moderately damaged during the Battle of Jutland and required a month and a half of repairs. Apart from providing distant support during the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1917, the ship spent the rest of the war on uneventful patrols of the North Sea. She was placed into reserve in 1920, then was sold for scrap in 1922 to meet the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty.

Book Review #15 for 2025 is Walter Borneman's The Admirals: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King - The Five -Star Admirals Who Won the War at Sea. This was a good comparison/contrast of American naval leadership in WW2. The flaws and the strengths of each man are part of the narrative. ☕☕☕☕ #ww2 #navalhistory #history #books #bookreview @histodons @bookstodon
