Animal friendly infrastructure - Road ecology

"Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they’re practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. , the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill. "

The October horror series at The Security Economist continues.

After Invasion of the Data Snatchers, we move deeper into the lab:

Frankenkieselsteine: The Security Disincentives of the Internet of Things

The recent AWS US-EAST-1 outage knocked out security cameras, Alexa devices, and beds (!) among an array of connected endpoints: a vivid reminder of how dependent the IoT ecosystem is on invisible infrastructure.

This piece digs into why the IoT’s growth model rewards “ship fast, fix maybe” over “design safe,” how the Victors of innovation take the spoils while the villagers rake the ash-heap, and why it’s time for a modern-day safety board for code.

Byron Bay has a 60-day holiday rental cap
abc.net.au/news/2025-09-23/60-

Bellingen Shire should have a 60-day holiday rental cap too. Pollution from traffic generated by holiday makers, cleaners, lawn maintenance machinery, tradespeople, deliveries and linen companies could be reduced.

So AI comes with societal costs. Mass unemployment, water diversion from drinking and agriculture to data center cooling, energy use and carbon emissions, and even messing with truth/trust in what comes through our screens. How can society get the to absorb its ? Where do you ? What do you fine? How does society supervise? Who regulates?

@bjn @david_chisnall @bruces Software's technical debt is a liability that never shows up on the books. Same for environmental costs (heat/carbon) and adverse health/social side effects (e.g. human moderation). When you provision funds for these hidden costs or (and nobody does), marginal costs never get close to zero.

@hkrn It would be great if cloud services included charges for building reserves to compensate for . Like data center heat and water . This would drive efficiencies that matter to society into operational decisions.

@craignewmark @niemanlab @janethaven @datasociety are challenging in tech. They rise from design, operations, and governance. And like physical pollutants, those causing harm are often distant and intermediated from harmed people and institutions.
