However, "better" can be (and often is) a far cry from "decent." Sometimes a little improvement only shows how much farther our respective societies have yet to go.

i think a lot of binary trans people were traumatized into believing that they needed to earn the right to be gendered correctly within a cisnormative gender binary and that if those of us who oppose that binary altogether succeed all that work will have been for nothing

I didn't ask to be non-binary and bisexual, but I would never change that aspect of myself, even if I was given the opportunity.
