In today’s installment of classic productions everyone on earth except me has seen—I saw a performance of The #Nutcracker for the first time. Sure, I was familiar with many of the songs but never actually watched it and didn’t know the story.

Realized how quite simple the core story is: family Christmas party; some bratty kids; broken nutcracker gift is repaired; girl dreams of it; helps it defeat a bunch of mice and turn into a prince; and gets a feast and a long song-and-dance show as thanks.

I was trying to think outside the box and do a non-traditional nutcracker.

A colorful window vinyl transfer of a large nutcracker has been applied to a sunroom slider. It has a blue coat and red pants, a very handsome mustache and scary square teeth. Behind it a decorated and lighted tree is visible, and outdoor colorful lights also reflect on the glass.

December is a wild month in dance for Philly. So much dancing! And so many Nutcrackers, each with a different take, from classic Balanchine to Afro-Brazilian, ballet to contemporary to tap, everybody has a version.
