A lone Vicuña stands in the yellow brush assessing my every move. It's one of many we encounter in this area, known as Campamento Geotermico Corfo, not far from the geysers. The desert landscape is a kaleidoscope of earth tones, running from soft white, through tan hues and yellows. I've travelled to many places with diverse ecosystems, Chile is definitely near the top of that list.

Madrid was founded as a coal mining town, sitting on a 30-mile bed of anthracite coal. After the mines closed, it became a ghost town, until artists brought it back in the 70s and 80s. Located on the scenic Turquoise Trail between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, it is known for eclectic galleries, shops, restaurants, and mining history.

Moving clouds above dark rock faces sit above Glaciar el Brujo. There's a band of light on the glacier, a line across the ice floating in the water can be seen in front. Black rocks of various size pepper the face of the glacier, proof that it's actively forging a path through the mountainous landscape, ripping out whatever is in its way. The occasional cracking / crunching as the glacier calves, followed by a thunder-like explosion is definitive evidence of its power.

Large pieces of floating ice sit next to our zodiac. Going slow as we're almost surrounded by the moving ice that pours down into the fjord from the various glaciers nearby. One sits at the back of the opening between the flanking mountains. It's obscured by the moving dark cloud over it. The ice is fascinating, at least until it starts to congregate in your path to safety. Our underpowered zodiac managed to bust through, requiring a few runs at it.

Gran Quivira is the largest of the three sites within the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. It is located about 25 miles south of #Mountainair, #NewMexico. It preserves the ruins of a large pueblo, once known as Las Humanas, and two Spanish mission churches built by the Tompiro people.

A warm, morning glow over the snow-capped, chiselled peaks of Adelaide Island. A bit of dark cloud to the left adds a little drama. The seas is quite calm here of the southern tip of Adelaide Island, Antarctica. At 67° South, we are below the Antarctic Circle, where very few expedition-style ships venture: This boat only makes 2 or three runs here per season. A few more degrees south and big ice becomes a real problem …not going there!

Looking down and over the railing of our expedition ship into the rippled water of the bay. Reflections of the chiselled peaks can be seen in the water, decorated with scattered ice flowing through it. The landscape is stunningly harsh, although it's beaty and warmth radiate all around …or it could be that it's Valentines Day.

Antarctica Day, December 1, commemorates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959. The treaty sets forth strict guidelines to protect the very important ecosystem of the Antarctic Continent. Today, China and Norway routinely ignore the treaty, scooping up tons, upon tons of Krill. Krill is the building block of pretty much the entire food chain, shrimp and other crustations depend on it, as do penguins and whales.
