Of course you are also right that the extra chips added cost over USB

It’s the year of our Lord 2025 … and thanks to @faheus’ excellent Nerdsniping skills I’m trying to get my old #FireWire #ieee1394 Audio Interfaces running reliably in Linux ;)
Verdict so far: MOTU amazingly works very well using in-kernel ALSA FireWire drivers. FFADO (in its pipewire-incarnation) still a catastrophe, as was 12 years ago. EchoAudio still randomly crashes machines as was the case 2014 :).

having latency to an external usb3 jbod with 4 2.5" sata SSDs of 1600ms-24000ms is definitely not a good sign so i will be swapping some cables if i can, i might have to 'cart some over from bestbuy or staples. they use the type-B port on the business end of the enclosure.
or of course #firewire 800 😆 oh god i actually have a pci fw400 and fw800 adapter somewhere. theoretically fw800 is capable of 100MBps and i'm not breaking 50MBps so there's no g-ddamned way i am getting 5Gbps to the box.

И вот жалобы фотографов на то, что кофе успевает остыть, пока все данные будут скопированы с карты, дошли до председателей SD Association и CompactFlash Association, и те приняли решительные меры: выпустили стандарт SD Express (и CFexpress ). Наша команда ( Positive Labs ) занимается исследованием безопасности программно-аппаратных систем и системного ПО. Поэтому мы внимательно наблюдали за развитием событий еще с 2018 года — с момента публикации стандарта, который обещал огромный прирост скорости за счет подключения карты к шине PCIe. Но мы следили не только за бенчмарками скорости, хотя она, конечно, внушительная. Наличие PCIe потенциально опасно из-за возможности доступа к памяти устройства, а это очень интересный вектор атак.Вот только до недавнего времени производители контроллеров и пользовательских устройств не спешили с поддержкой стандарта SD Express. Мы уже даже было обрадовались, что они научились на своих ошибках, и теперь не хотят давать внешним устройствам доступ к памяти (спойлер: нет ). А пока расскажем, почему уделяем столько внимания почтенной шине PCI.

This month marks 24 years since the #iPod classic launched. Although the brand no longer exist, it marked a renaissance in Apple’s return to market influence. I was able pickup a classic and a #PowerBook G4 Titanium 6 years ago so I could relive nostalgia of mounting your iPod, it was technically a #Firewire hard drive after all. The songs I have synced are of the era.
Früher: Wir setzen auf #USB, mit einem Host und alles andere Clients, weil die Mikrocontroller für die peer-to-peer-Architektur von #Firewire zu viel kosten. Wir (USB) machen für Host und Client unterschiedliche Stecker/Buchsen.
Heute: Wer Host und wer Client ist, sollen die beiden Geräte bitte aushandeln. Weil das mit Host & Client nicht mehr klar ist, gibt es für alle den gleichen Stecker/Buchse.
