#plaintext

I have set up my Thunderbird to use plain text and "interleaved, quote under" style, which is also what the Linux Kernel recommends. By default, it doesn't quote at all. I'm sick of throwing huge chunks of HTML back and forth where any long conversation grows into a formatting mess.

Here's my (redacted) #PlainTextPlanner schedule from yesterday, in #Obsidian. I love the blending of mindfully entered events/todos with pre-scheduled tasks!

Also, it's super helpful to divide the day into 5 broad time blocks. 06, 09, 12, 15, 18. It gives structure and flexibility, and allows for easy shifting of entries between time blocks.

06 = 6-9 am, 18 = 6-9 pm.

At the bottom of one of my posts, I have a plaintext piano tool that displays the notes of any scale in any key you like. I've been using it for practice at the moment, and I think you might find it interesting as well. I paste the diagram in a codeblock in my daily note.

I've been chaotically bookmarking things to watch for some time (reddit links, imdb links, movie names, directors, etc.) to an #emacs #org file primarily via Journelly.

The thing is, it's not super practical to browse when I need it. Today, I finally did something about that. A little scripting and LLM help got me my first browsable catalog.

Maybe I'll write this up and also share the film/tv series list. #film #movie #movies #tv #tvseries #show #shows #video #videos #plaintext

I like my new habit tracker. In I can easily count the tags. It's easy to record both on my PC and on my mobile device. The different lengths allow me to see a visual trend. Even in the text editor.

plaintext habit tracker in text editor trough tags and date. #active/year/rating_XXX. the tags counted in obsidian.

My plugin-free #PlainTextPlanner has a continuous calendar! It's for planning and for navigation. Each month, week, and day is a Markdown link to that section of the file. I love the simplicity and convenience of this! #plainText #obsidian

@gumnos @sushee @monospace Same here (not necessarily in the details, but in principle). The robustness, simplicity and durability of #plaintext is of great importance and hard to beat.

2026-01-20

@sushee @monospace

and just as (if not more) importantly, open standards.

It's one of the main reasons that just about all my data-files are #plaintext.
• My calendar? in remind(1) format
• My finances? In ledger(1) #plaintextaccounting format
• My todos? in todo.txt format and linked to my ~/.plan
• My notes? just text-file with a bit of light markdown

Tools may come and go, but the data is still accessible with any text-editor and mungable to other formats as needed.

Is there a plain text tool you can’t do without?

“ In theory, no. That’s the beauty of plain text. But I would be sad if I could no longer use iA Writer or Taskpaper.”

Thanks, Aleem! Great post. #PlainText #WhyPlainText

@ellane I couldn't function without the myriad of IOS Shortcuts I use. They put the text into the correct place for me so i don't have to open up different apps and wait for their loading screens. Since speed is one of the best things about the shortcuts just write to a file, and I can open that file from the correct app later.

This week: How would you answer these questions posed by plain text guru, Scott Nesbitt? (He no longer maintains his website, sadly.)

Question 7: Is there one tool you can't do without?

Join the fun by tagging your answers #WhyPlainText, and mention me (@ellane)

I just updated the docs for my One Big Text File (OBTF) journal.
One file.
Plain text.
Chronological.
No apps or productivity theater—just enough structure to let patterns emerge over time. It’s not about doing more. It’s about seeing clearly.

MuseScore is a wonderful notation program with a graphic interface and a text file interface.

So you can change the text file. See the score. And play the score.

MuseScore is open source and has a music notation website of pieces scored with MuseScore.

This is an incredible app: simple note taking that syncs to my laptop over iCloud without a subscription.
