Happy New Year to friends from Then and friends for Here and all those in between #poetry #poetrycommunity #resolutions #newyear #newyearseve #poems #poems4kids #poemsforkids

Be More You
(New Year’s Resolution)

This New Year
choose honesty
choose to love
who you can be

Don’t believe
you’re not all that
just because
your abs aren’t flat

This New Year
see what you’ve got
Build on that
Not what you’re not

Don’t believe
you’re wrong or strange
or to fit
you have to change

This New Year
Chin up, chest out
Recapture
what you’re all about

Don’t believe
that you have failed
just because
some ships have sailed

If last year
was quite the quest
Take a bow
You passed the test

Do believe
your day is here
Don’t defer
another year

This New year
forget the vows
Concentrate
on Here and Now

This New Year
in all you do
do all you can
Just be more you

A little poem dedicated to the glory of #childhood and #Outside A #personification #poem #poetry #poetrycommunity #poems #poems4kids

Let’s Go See Outside

Let’s leap from our beds, throw those dull curtains wide
Let’s dress in a second and go see Outside

Outside watched through windows, the day we were born
She showed us the sunshine, the moonlight and dawn

Outside cheered us on as we pedalled first bikes
She dared us to walk haunted paths through the night

Outside saw us fall and rise up with new scars
above blades of grass, underneath dying stars

Outside set us free, let us run wild and proud
through settling snow, frozen promises vowed

Let’s run with her wind and go bathe in her breeze
Let’s roll down her hills and go climb up her trees

Let’s dance in her rain and go paddle her brooks
Let’s seek out her crannies and go hide in her nooks

Let’s doze with her daisies, go sail on her clouds
Let’s whisper our wishes in her dappled boughs

Let’s grace her with giggles, go smudge her with smiles
Let’s dance a new moment down brief blossomed aisles

Let’s leap from our beds, throw those dull curtains wide
Let’s dress in a second and go thank Outside

I love a word prompt ... this time the word is #Kaput by children's magazine The Toy Press #poetry #poems #poems4kids #writingcommunity #writing

Kaput

When you’re in a rut
and you’ve lost your strut
When every sentence starts with But

When your wonder’s cut
and you’ve lost your guts
When every avenue is shut

When your pitch won’t putt
and your chin’s lost jut
When every tongue is tipped with Tut

Then go fill the rut
and dust down your strut
and show the world you’re not kaput

It's fun adding a #suffix to words that don't usually have one: #oomph #poetry #poems #poems4kids #poemsforkids @brianbilston

Oomph

If you lose your oomph
on an oomphless, grey day
know an oomphful tomorrow
is an oomphbeat away

Tarantulas In My Trunks

Tarantulas in my trunks
Swordfish in my socks
Scorpions in my slippers
Crocodiles in my Crocs

Mosquitoes in my mittens
Vipers in my vest
Roaches in my ribbons
Ducklings in my dress

Lobsters in my leggings
Hedgehogs in my hat
Beetles in my beret
Cuckoos in my cap

Natterjacks in my knickers
Woodlice in my weaves
Hornets in my hoodies
Slow slugs in my sleeves

Bats in my bikinis
Snakeflies in my seams
Flatfish in my flip flops
Jellyfish in jeans

These creatures in my clothes
These Piranhas in my pants
are really rather marvellous
Good gosh, they make me dance!

I love contemplating about how nearly everything that surrounds us, began with a spark in a human head. Imagine what we can create with our own head sparks! I even created every image within the question mark when I thought I could illustrate my own work. #poet #poetry #poetrycommunity #poems4kids #poemsforkids #writingcommunity #thursdaythoughts @brianbilston #inventions #sparks

From Pac-Man, Oz, the moonwalk, Jaws
To rockets and sliced bread
Once sparks that lit up question marks
Ideas in human heads...

The PS4, X-box, the door
The BMX, the kite
King Kong, Ping Pong and hip hop songs
The book, to read and write

The Pyramids, New York, Madrid
The submarine, the chair
The bed, cheese spread and Barbie’s head
The wheel, the bulb, the square

The swimming pool, the slide, the school
The fizzy pop, the gum
The shoe, Kung Fu, the flushing loo
The phone, the clock, the drum

The microchip, the paper clip
Cartoons, the ball, the screw
Blue jeans, baked beans and trampolines
The toothbrush, pens, shampoo

The aeroplane, ice-cream, champagne
The world wide web, the fridge
French fries, cat’s eyes and custard pies
The road, the car, the bridge

Wonder what's inside your head
Magnify the sparks
Imagine what you will invent
With your own question marks

New poem. If you know, you know! #haribo #poetry #poets #poems4kids #poetry4kids #poemsforkids

Barry Hoe

Hello my name is Barry Hoe
I just turned ten last week
I need to get this off my chest
Just don’t call me a freak

Some food I love is rather strange
But please don’t laugh and nudge
for lots of you eat strange things too
so who are you to judge?

I flood my tongue with creamy milk
and cola’s fizzy spew
What might surprise you though is this:
I eat the bottles too!

I like a sour cherry snack
I feed on unfried eggs
I swallow whole ice creams in one
I nibble robot’s legs

I don’t like meat but I eat sheep
and when I do I smile
while I crush heart throbs in my teeth
and chomp on crocodiles

I chew the heads off dinosaurs
I’ve gnawed a thousand bears
I gulp down giant strawberries
I never, ever share

I will devour dummies too
especially those with tang
I’m partial to fake diamond rings
when I have hunger pangs

I suck on snakes and butterflies
I munch on rainbow strips
I gobble sizzling lightning strikes
and always lick my lips

At Easter, I bite bunny ears
At Christmas, I taste trees
And when my mummy moans at me
I scream, “I don’t like cheese!”

Chameleons and turtle tails
A megaphone, a boot
I’ve scoffed a lot of them tonight
I don’t do veg or fruit

So yes, I just turned ten last week
My name is Barry Hoe
But how I wish my name of birth
was Happy Harry Boe

A simple poem of positivity for #Friday . Too many children I teach are far better at telling me what they don't like about themselves, rather than what they do.... never mind love #poetry #poetrycommuntity #poemsforkids #poems4kids #poet #poets #loveyourself

I Like

I like my teeth, I like my grin,
I like my cheeks, I like my chin
I like my laugh, I like my nose
I like my fingers and my toes

I like my bounce, my skip, my hop
I like my bottom and my top
I like my bones, my skin, my heart
I like my body’s every part

I like my front, I like my face
I like my smile, I like its grace
I like my back, I like my spine
I like my dreams for they’re all mine

New #poem ... a #poems4kids about waking up in strange places @brianbilston #poetry #poet #poems #baby #poets

Waking Up in Strange Places

I’ve woken up in many places
Some odd, some quite bizarre:
The kitchen floor, the local store
My next door neighbour’s car

The spa, the park, the cinema
in supermarket aisles
Beneath a slide, a carriage ride
On top of laundry piles

The London Eye and Ting Tong Thai
Outside of Boots, in Greggs
Amongst balloons and macaroons
Amid dad-dancing legs

At carvery roasts, on soggy toast
By donkeys in the sand
On boating lakes, The Duck and Drake
The gates of Disneyland

Upon the loo, at Chester zoo
Just past the chimpanzees
By parrots eating carrots
On top of ladies knees

In cafes, bars and seminars
In pelvic yoga class
At swimming pools, my sister’s school
At my baptism mass

Just yesterday I fell asleep
On beanbags back at home
but woke to be surrounded by
some garden centre gnomes

But I’m not crazy, super-lazy
I bet you’ve guessed, well maybe
that all these places where I woke
was when I was baby

A little poem about no one noticing you and all you have to offer ... but believe me, one day, they will #poems4kids #mentalhealth #poetry #poems

Who cares?

Today
no one noticed me
again
Tomorrow I hope
they might
catch my light

Today
is like yesterday
again
When no one noticed
I fight
feeling slight

Today
is soon tomorrow
again
where no one sees
I’m scared
But who cares?

This day
could be the first day
ever
where someone sees
my prayers
are like theirs

About time I wrote a poem for children after being sucked into the adult poetry universe. This one's for those that love the power of a #football #poemsforkids #poems4kids
@OtterBarryBooks
#TEACHers #FootballFocus #footballs A little bit inspired by #Prince and his song #guitar #poet #poetry #poetrycommunity #writer #amwriting

Not Like I Love My Football

I love a pizza
I love to dance
My PlayStation
My SpongeBob pants
but not like I love
my football

I love a giggle
I love to prank
My bicycle
My lizard tank
but not like I love
my football

I love a birthday
I love to skate
My newest shoes
My oldest mate
but not like I love
my football

My football gives me
a chance to soar
From head to toes
it makes me more
It gives me goals
I have to score

I love the world
I love you all
But not like I love
my football

My 1st #Villanelle poem. Easier said than done, but #NoScreenDays can spark a child's imagination in ways a screen cannot. Maybe we need a #NationalNoScreenDay

I'm an old fuddy-duddy though, where screens were 80's Saturday morning TV and #Atari for a few hours but nothing beat playing #outside #poems4kids #poems4kids #childhood #noScreenDay #Poetry #poems #writing #writingcommunity

A No Screen Day

Let’s make today a no screen day
Let’s run outside, wide-open-eyed
Imagination needs to play

No worries if the clouds are grey
Let wonder bolts blow them aside
Let’s make today a no screen day

Go let your worries go astray
Go river stride, go rainbow slide
Imagination needs to play

Go fairy hunt, go dragon slay
Go zombie hide, go phoenix ride
Let’s make today a no screen day

Today’s about to run away
Without you in it, stuck inside
Imagination needs to play

So quickly, chase it, beg it stay
Put on your pride and go outside
Let’s make today a no screen day
Imagination needs to play

I love the simple joys and philosophy of Nursery teaching. My children are at the stage where they tell me vehemently, " I can put my own shoes on Mr. Bird!" Who am I to dictate what's left and what's right?! #earlyyears #nursery #poems4kids #Philosophy #philosopher
#teaching

I can put my own shoes on
and I don’t mind they’re tight
I’m only 3 and life’s too long
to care what’s left or right

A little bit of #Friday #positivity for all those dreamers who were told not to dream #poems4kids #poemsforkids #poetry #poetrycommunity #pigsmightfly #writingcommunity #writing

And Pigs Might Fly

One day when young I shared my dreams,
“And pigs might fly!” they frowned,
Today, years on, those pigs fly high,
refusing to come down

"Before Red was Red." I can't stop writing #poetry at the moment #poetrycommunity #poems4kids #poemsforkids #poetrylovers #poem #poems #cambrian @brianbilston

Before Red was Red

Before red was named red
Before green became green
Before eons had passed
Before humans with dreams

There was once a big bang
and the universe dawned
and some billion years later
against odds, you were born

against odds, you found air
against odds, you found will
after Cambrian explosions
put your odds about nil

You’re a trillion to one
You’re a miracle child
You have made it to Earth
You’re assigned your own smile

But your purpose and plight
But your fight and your fears
But your labour and love
has x number of years

So like butterfly wings
can change worlds with one flap
so your love, purpose, fight
can create your own map

and that map when you’re gone
after shortest of stays
newer humans will use
to traverse future days

I wanted to write something for #WorldBookDay2023. My second ever #sonnet If all the world's a stage, then all the world's a book #WorldBookDay @WorldBookDayUK #poems4kids
#WorldBookWeek #poetrycommunity #POEMS

Your Book of Life

Your story starts with one stark empty page
Your life thereafter finds its unique hook
From your first wriggle, ‘All the world’s a stage’
From your first giggle, all the world’s a book

You’re given names: a character unread
But soon your words and sounds will sell your pitch
Your phrases, sentences and chapters spread
Your bound between the lines of why and which

By twelve years old, your debut book’s complete
Are childhood fairy tales put on the shelf?
Can come-of-age teen dramas then compete?
Will your life’s plot be driven by yourself?

Your once upon a time was just the hook
You sequel though could be your greatest book

"Happy!" Never underestimate its glory and power for you never know when it will take a leave of absence. Happy #Friday people of the world #mentalhealth #MentalHealthMatters #FridayMotivation #FridayFeeling #fridayvibes #Poetin #poetrycommunity #poems4kids

Happy

Happy
What a word!
What a feeling!
It’s quite absurd
that when it’s seen
and when it’s heard
and when it’s felt
and when it’s stirred

happy sometimes
goes astray
leaves you lonely
moves away
but when it leaves
on days of grey
be sure
it will return
another day
