I ordered #Beelink SER8 #minipc a week ago. It still hasn't been shipped, but I really hope to get it soon and start playing with it.
I plan to put #Proxmox on it and see where I can go from there. It would also be cool to have a Linux desktop running somewhere. It's been ages since I've last had Arch and I would love to try Mint and see how it goes.

After some hardware and software configuration changes, I can saturate now my 40 GBit NIC (Intel XL710-QDA2 on a HP DL 380 G8 Server) with around 20 GBit/sec. This is now much better than previously with only around 11 GBit/sec. #virtualization #homelab #proxmox
I've switched from #9pfs to #virtiofs mount for a VM I run under my #proxmox host at home and did a few #fio benchmarks.
9pfs (before):
seq read (1M, 1 thread) - 1950 MiB/s
rand read (4K, 4 threads) - 213 MiB/s
seq write (1M, 1 thread) - 468 MiB/s
rand write (4K, 4 threads) - 80 MiB/s
virtiofs (after):
seq read (1M, 1 thread) - 5258 MiB/s
rand read (4K, 4 threads) - 291 MiB/s
seq write (1M, 1 thread) - 1074 MiB/s
rand write (4K, 4 threads) - 84 MiB/s
2.7x sequential read, 2.3x sequential write, 1.3x random read, and 1.05x random write.
Pretty good improvements!
Especially that this is for my media (movies/tv) mount where mostly sequential I/O is typically performed.
Note the underlying hardware is Samsung QVO SATA SSD, which is rather slow SSD, and likely a bottleneck in those random read/write tests. I expect there would be much bigger differences on a fast NVMe drive.

Coming back to my brother's new #HomeLab I'm trying to get his new #Proxmox Host ready. The little Beelink N100 Box got a second SSD so the #PVE Pool is now RAID1. Additionally we got him an external NVMe case for USB3 for backups via #ProxmoxBackupServer. Had to run that on the node itself, otherwise the external SSD couldn't be added as removable Datastore in #PBS. *sigh*
But finally it seems to come together. Now adding #Tailscale Client as remote support solution and tweaks for SSDs...

J'étais parti pour faire un cluster afin de transférer mes VM d'un node vers un autre. C'était pas trivial, notamment supprimer le node, et en cas de soucis, j'étais emmerdé.
Et puis j'ai vu une vidéo qui donne une autre option : faire une backup des VM, les stocker sur un disque et les restaurer sur le nouveau node.
C'est plus simple et comme je dois déplacer mon pool ZFS, ce sera simple ! ^^

This is a combo post with both context and guide. Its also the first in a series on migrating from Vagrant/VMWare/Ansible to Proxmox/OpenTofu/Ansible. In it I work through some issues of building Guac on Ubuntu 24.04 and installing TigerVNC on Kali.
This post is a stepping stone on the way to resolving the issue of frequent Kali crashes, though I think of it as only a preparatory step as it deals with a niche issue where SPICE doesn't work for me on Proxmox. I hope to get on to the IaC stuff soon.
