"Punic people were genetically diverse with almost no Levantine ancestors"

Comment from Iosif Lazaridis:

"""
Consider this surprising fact:

There was a time during the 1st millennium BC that
a. in the West Mediterranean, Greek descendants advanced the Punic cause, and;
b. in the Levant, Phoenician descendants advanced Hellenism.

ROOTS PhD student Sara Mura uses sensory theories and digital techniques such as 3D modeling, GIS spatial analysis and acoustic simulations to explore the #sensoryexperiences in #Punic temples using the example of Monte Sirai, Sardinia. For the presentation of her project, she received the First Runner-Up Poster Award at the annual meeting of the #ArchaeologicalInstituteofAmerica AIA

Congratulations!

An #archaeological discovery was made during trenching works in Birkirkara/Malta. While preparing the site for the installation of a potable water line, workers uncovered a rock-cut chamber that turned out to be part of an ancient #Punic tomb complex.

Oversimplified has released his first new #history video in over a year! I haven’t watched it yet, but I presume it will cover #Hannibal Barca’s incredible campaign to attack Rome in the second #Punic war.

Map showing select #Phoenician / #Canaanite colonies and settlements with their known or reasonably suggested endonymic names.

This map is more information card than eye-candy, with a look-up table of settlements, being a review of almost 90 different sources. As always all information is on the image. There are two versions here: A and B, with B being for if A is too hard to read.

I did try to automate citations due to the ridiculous amount of reading. There may be errors due to the software.

Coinciding with the release of my novels as audiobooks, part of the opening chapter also features in this recent podcast.

It's quite a romantic scene and it was wonderful to listen to such an accomplished narrator read it. It was also nice to listen to a female narrator interpret it. It was read by Glenda Villamar and she conveys the emotions and hopes of the characters exceptionally well. I will be listening to this many times!

The image features a book cover to the left and the title of the Podcast episode and novel on the right. The books title is Masinissa: Ally of Carthage and depicts a young couple in the foreground with an ancient cityscape in the background. The day appears sunny and warm and the couple are lightly attired. The woman wears a loose orange robe and is also adorned with a few gold ornaments around her forehead, shoulder and arm. Her headdress or crown also includes a few inlaid jewels. The man who is bearded with moderately long hair is turned towards her in a protective and affectionate pose. His left hand holds his sword which is sheathed and belted at his waist. He wears a short tunic of a rich and regal purple and a long green cape. This cape has the symbol of the Numidian kingdom, the profile of a horse with a palm tree behind, depicted in gold in its centre.

TIL that the Punic surname “Barca”, as in the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca (as well as his father Hamilcar, and brothers Hasdrubal and Mago), is Phoenician for “lightning”. I don’t know how I never made the connection before, given that Phoenician is Semitic and I speak Hebrew (where the same √brq root is also used to mean “lightning”). I guess my brain is just in full on Latin Mode or something when I’m thinking of ancient Rome? Anyway - Hannibal “Lightning” Barca! ⚡️

An excerpt from Cicero's Cato Maior de Senectute ("Cato the Elder on old age"). It was an essay published in 44BC on the subject of aging and death.
In it, Cicero makes reference to the relative vigour Masinissa had possessed in his 90th year. (148BC) During the previous year, the King had raided Carthage in a provocation which would lead to the third and last #Punic war between #Rome and #Carthage.
