        DRIVING PERAMBULATORS
  “I would not trust the member for Palmerston or the member for Kaiapoi to drive a motor-car,” said Mr. G. Witty (Riccarton) in the House of Representatives last night, while discussing the age at which people should be licensed to drive motor-cars.
  “How about a wheelbarrow?” suggested another member.
  “I would not even trust them to drive a perambulator,” declared Mr. Witty. "A boy or girl was being educated during the period of youth, and they learnt to drive just the same as they learnt other things.”

The reason for the City Council’s refusal to grant a bus conductor’s license [sic] to Miss A. Russell was stated at the meeting of the council on Thursday; says an #Auckland exchange. [In response to Miss Russell, the Finance and legal Committee submitted a report] … to the council on Thursday, when it was recommended that the following reply be supplied: “That it is against the public interest and inappropriate in normal times and conditions to license #women as conductors of public vehicles.” The recommendation was adopted without comment. The following resolution adopted by the Civic League was forwarded by that body:—“That this league protests against the action of the City Council in refusing a license as bus conductor to a woman merely on the ground of sex.” This was received.

Somehow missed that #MaaikeHornstra's final dissertation chapter is out in
#SexRoles. We use the #OKiN survey to examine #kinkeeping involvement across parents & how these practices are related to parent-child closeness.

A few key findings:
1) #kinkeeping - the work needed to build & maintain family ties - is primarily done by women, irrespective of their biological tie to the child. In fact, when involved, #stepmothers are engaged in more kinkeeping activities than any type of father (as shown in attached figure).

2) we found that when a spouse takes an active role in #kinkeeping, it can foster ties between parents & children. For example, a #stepmother who helps with kin-work may facilitate closer ties between separated biological fathers and their children.

3) #2 echoes - for example - the qualitative work of #MariaSchmeeckle published in #JMF which highlights the active role which a #stepmother plays in facilitating contact & inclusion between herself, her husband, & the involved children (his & hers).
