tinkering around with the latest release of #Synchronet #BBS on #Linux and I must say, things have improved for the better over the past two decades - nice!

Making progress with the #synchronet system. Got #qwk downloads working along with #syncterm as well. Now just have to get use to how #multimail works as the mail reader.

Early stages of an incremental mining game I'm writing in JavaScript for Synchronet BBS. I really dislike writing JavaScript for HTML/DOM right now, so this has been nice to help me expand my knowledge and be able to move forward. #javascipt #bbs #Synchronet #synchronetbbs

Another #Floppy #Museum and #BBS update!
TL;DR: The BBS is now served from the Novell server, and I've crammed a Novell client onto the http://floppy.museum/ floppy disk so it also runs a BBS node!

Long story:
For a while now, my BBS has been down because of corruption of message files, in turn caused by incompatibilities between OS/2's SMB implementation and that of #Samba. And since the latter has dropped support for old clients entirely, I had to do something to not only revive, but ensure the long-term survival of my BBS.

In my previous post on the subject, I bragged about my #OS/2 and #Novell #NetWare server. It's now serving most of my retro gear, including the machines that run my BBS nodes. I'm hoping this solves the problems I've had running multiple #Synchronet nodes.

And just for kicks, I managed to free up even more space on the floppy disk that the Floppy Museum boots and runs from, and squeezed in a Novell client. After a bit of fiddling to free up some RAM, I got a BBS node running, too! So now it has an HTTP server, an FTP server, an IRC server *and* a BBS node! All on an old 286. Beat that, The Cloud!

So fire up your Telnet clients and connect to floppy.museum, port 23!

(For anyone interested, the math challenge you get when connecting is a piece of nginx+lua code, you can find it here: https://github.com/ltning/telnet-challenge-proxy)

It's been a long journey but I finally have my new BBS in a usable state!

Name: v01d c1ph3r
Telnet: bbs.canerduh.com:23056
SSH: bbs.canerduh.com:22056

Lots more to do but at least now it doesn't just look like a stock Synchronet BBS.

Synchronet BBS as an #onion node makes #telnet over #Tor a secure protocol because your exit node is the #BBS itself...

Brilliant!

- Synchronet over Tor on an rPi - Marvelous!

But what about those #MS_Windows users out there? How about a gzipped tarball, all nicely packaged up so you can distribute around, of a custom built #PuTTY client that will securely connect people to your #Synchronet_BBS over telnet?

Brilliant!

- Create a custom PuTTY package to distribute for your BBS over Tor - Magnificent!

What was that again? Oh yeah, ... Brilliant!

Enjoy!

set up a #Synchronet #BBS on my spare #raspberrypi, and it works!

Mostly. I am still trying to get it to work with #usenet, and I still need to get email working.

I'm not sure why I should have a BBS in the first place, but there you go.

It mostly is actually intended as a #nntp server for #ttrpg groups. And it largely works. I can USE it as a server. I just can't pull any new articles from other servers right now, which makes this somewhat less than ideal.

so, idea I have been working on the last few days: #synchronet #bbs on my old #raspberrypi, small #usenet server including web gateway, all geared towards #ttrpg stuff.
lets see what else a pi can run at the same time.

kind of a fool's errand, but it should keep me busy for the next two weeks.

Well I'll be damned, Synchronet works locally. This weekend, installation of games will commence in earnest, then customize the shell for blind users. Should be a fun time. #BBS #Synchronet #nerbbs

Over the last week or so I've been checking out old #bbs's #synchronet is the system I setup to learn with.

There are some semi standards for #bbs avatars as well. Both #synchronet and #mysticbbs (I believe with the proper mod) can do this. Perhaps this can be something to add later as well, for when in #textmode only

@blongden yeah, #Synchronet is a "modern" #BBS project, it's open source and cross-platform.

It's got a pretty thicc stack, including dialup, telnet, SSH, HTTP, FTP, IRC, finger, SMTP, gopher and moar.

I've run SBBS for... gosh, I guess ~15+ years now, and have coded thousands upon thousands of lines of custom code for it.

Deffo my fave BBS software!

I can highly recommend you give into your temptation! :modem: :ablobcatattention:

Welp, tonight I've compiled the latest #Synchronet #BBS code from repo onto a #Linux VPS.

I guess I should probably spend some time to security harden and customize it, before opening it up to the world...

I've written quite a bit of custom code for Synchronet in my days, and I love to run it as customised as possible.

So it's one of those things that could lead me down the rabbit hole for months on end... Ooft.

@vga256 ah no way! I also ran INiQ (the tetris was just... amazing. Still remember it today). :tetris: :ablobcatattention:

Also Renegade (my first stint as a #sysop), First Class, System/X, Pancake, and... well, a ton of other ones. These days I am a big #Synchronet fan.

Look forward to checking it out!
