Thinking about replacing my hodgepodge of laptops with a single one. Of course running linux then, not sure on the distribution, but one thing I'm currently always struggling with is battery and sleep/hybernate management.
I have 2 laptops running debian 13 at the moment and both never properly go to sleep, so whenever I put them away for 2-3 days I come back to an empty battey.
Sooo... any recommendations from the #linux bubble? Not set on a Model yet, but probably something like an older ThinkPad like a T490 or T14 Gen1, maybe a Latitude 5420 or so.. Not sure.
I can understand why he uses Bazzite with no tweaking whatsoever though. Does it make Linux look bad that a lot of them DNF? Yes. But we need to see Linux looking bad when it is doing bad, so everyone knows what's going wrong and Bazzite is able to sort it out with support or bugfixes. Same thing for when Linus (Tech Tips) wiped the desktop to install Steam on Pop!_OS. (You have to ask why installing Steam wiped system packages, and System76 fixed it after Linus' exposure.)
You can't always have Linux shining in a good light. It has problems, it will have problems. It's software. Putting your head in the sand is part of the reason many conflicts and problems with Linux as a desktop OS stay for years and I prefer it if collectively, the Linux desktop people just stop doing that.

I wanted to automatically make boot options for snapper snapshots and ended up making these

https://codeberg.org/grafcube/uki-snapperuki-efi-boot automatically scans directories in your esp for efi executables and adds entries to your UEFI boot options while uki-snapper automatically creates boot entries/UKIs for snapper snapshots.
It has been working flawlessly so far. I use secure boot so I have to configure uki-snapper to build new images for each snapshot so I configured it to generate no more than 2 to fit in my esp. It also only works on arch right now since it depends on mkinitcpio but contributions to expand support are very welcome.

I think it’s much better than the cheap and nasty looking offerings I’ve seen. It then got me thinking whether I could do that on my #KDE #Wayland #desktop #monitor. And of course you can. You just need to download a third party plugin called #ApplicationWallpaper and configure it to run
xwayland-run -- /usr/libexec/xscreensaver/glplanet --root --mode globe
and voilà! It doesn’t seem to be too resource hungry though further usage will tell.
Some months ago, I discovered that #XScereensaver is available on #Android and so I can run of those hacks as a #LiveBackground on my phone (I like #glplanet).
Wolke really likes #Qobuz, but when trying to download an #audiobook it told Wolke “you either have to download each track by yourself or install our software that btw only runs on Microslops Windoof or the bitten apples toy OS”. Dang it, what is the problem with collections bigger than 100 files for your zip download? Guess Wolke needs to download everything by hand ... Urgh

Subtitle Edit https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit is one of the best subtitle editors out there, free or not, but it's a Windows-only program. It kind of runs semi-natively on Linux using Mono, but poorly - for example, the latest version has a glitch which shows only the first line in the text edit window, making it hard to use.
I've also been unable to install it using Wine (on Debian 12 at least, which has Wine 8 - maybe later versions of Wine work better), so no luck there either. Maybe I'll try again when I have the time to upgrade to Debian 13...
But I just now tried installing the latest version - the latest portable version extracted into a directory - as a non-Steam game in Steam, and launched it using the latest stable Proton - and it actually works! Why didn't I think of this earlier?
