Not sure about the $5 tag but some nice ideas if you are not sure what to do with your #raspnerryPi - most appear reasonably easy to commission too

YMMV

I have finally upgraded my #DIY home routers from #RPi 1 to RPi 3. This is part of my long term plan to abandon 32-bit #ARM.

With RPi 1 I was using rt2x00 USB Wi-Fi adapters with an external antenna. I was concerned about the performance of the internal "no-antenna" design of RPi 3 but it turns out to be pretty good also in AP mode.

After a week w/testing both in city apartment and country home, it works even better (Teams calls, Chromecast, Android speedtest) than old setups.

Since I know MX Linux by heart, my config of the Pi5 SBC with MX was quite fast.

I love what I saw so that is another OS to try for my SBC Pi5

I wanted to run something similar to pfSense on my SBC.

I found this site on which I saw OpenWRT (which I know & love but had forgotten, sue to a broken wifi router) and RaspAP

Im also going to install the MX-23.6_rpi_respin on a microSD card. It's a respin of Raspberry Pi OS which will work also with Pi5 hardware.

I bought this for an I'm going to use after a few years of it being idle. Most of the reason I bought it is to marvel at the fact that you can get 2TB in that form factor.

Sandisk microSDXC card with a size of 2TB.

New toy: a 16gb #RPI 5 with an M.2 hat. I'm waiting for a 2 hour (and growing!) web scraping job every morning and this little fella will do it for me before I wake up.

Not having run with my #RPi 4. It won't hand out an IP address with dnsmasq to a client that is requesting one. I can see in the logs it won't give out an IP, but I can't see my error in the config file... Probably a #dyslexia moment...! The logs don't say why it can't give out an IP address...!

I'll be the first to admit I'm not great at #soldering but I believe this should do the trick! These will display some basic information about the #Pi such as the hostname, CPU load, memory usage, disk usage and temperature.

So, I've been living here for three weeks now. Haven't boot up any machine yet proper. But I had laptop/monitor combo running just to confirm, that my solar can easily provide power the whole day.

And yet, here's the thing. It's not raining when it produces enough power. So I work around the plot or hike to get the feel of the ridge. When it is raining, the laptop drains too much for any consistency in workday.

Gotta dig out my and set it up proper again.

This is how my #Mastodon instance is spending its day according to CPU freq stats. It's #RPi 3 so I'd say it takes 2.5W on average. I'm going to try running one week with a power meter to see how well this calculation works.

I have upgraded my #Mastodon instance from v4.3.10 to v4.4.2. Apparently - and amazingly - it still seems to work!

Again a lot of manual steps each taking sometimes hours on a low-end #RPi.

I wish software upgrades were more easy and automatic...

Ancient #RPi serving home stereo AirPlay.

I'd prefer #NetBSD: https://schmonz.com/2024/06/07/small-arms/

Staged latest shairport-sync for #pkgsrc. Builds on NetBSD, #macOS. Normally I'd commit, wait for evbearmv6hf-el binary package, forget.

Another outage w/Bitwoods instance! This time 10 days (I was out of town), and the last journal logs were:
Jul 17 22:03:28 bitwoods systemd[1]: systemd-journald.service: Watchdog timeout (limit 3min)!
Jul 17 22:03:28 bitwoods systemd[1]: systemd-journald.service: Killing process 2898452 (systemd-journal) with signal SIGABRT.

It recovered by power cycling; I guess I need to enable the #RPi HW watchdog. I suspect there's some kind of resource leak and it deadlocks after long uptime.
