The Trump administration is reportedly drafting an executive order that would compel the Justice Department to sue states that enact laws regulating artificial intelligence, a move that could exceed presidential authority. The proposal emerges after disagreements among Senate Republicans over a broader plan to restrict state AI regulation, which ultimately failed due to bipartisan opposition concerned about AI's societal impacts. With public worries about job loss, children's safety, and energy costs rising, the move signals an aggressive attempt to assert federal control over emerging technology issues—challenging the traditional limits of presidential power. Will this executive order face legal obstacles or reshape state-federal dynamics on AI regulation? Reflecting on the global development of autonomous vehicles. There's a clear difference in strategy: rapid, large-scale public deployment in China versus a more cautious, regulation-first approach in Europe.

Each path has its merits, but the data feedback loop from real-world use is a powerful catalyst for improvement. It raises important questions about how to balance innovation with safety and public trust.

Today, our co-founder @michaelfoster.bsky.social co-signed and delivered a letter regarding the current UK #TechnologyPolicy to the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. We believe it is critical that the UK does not become dependent on US technologies which echo the corporate interests of Big Tech.

#MediaPolicy #CommunicationGovernance #TechnologyPolicy #MediaStudies: "The Global Media Policy Working Group is pleased to announce the publication of Global Communication Governance at the crossroads, the 20th title in the Palgrave/IAMCR book series Global Transformations in Media and Communication Research. Edited by Claudia Padovani, Véronique Wavre, Arne Hintz, Gerard Goggin and Petros Iosifidis.

The collection celebrates 20+ years of activity of the Working Group on Global Media Policy, addressing current challenges, trends and transformations in global communication governance. Exploring changes in the actors, issues, values and contexts of media and communications, it investigates the crossroads that media policy is facing and offers visions for the future. A diverse range of scholars and expert practitioners discuss what regulatory reforms and governing mechanisms are required to advance democratic participation and fundamental rights in platform societies.

Organized around five sections, the volume considers the geopolitics of emerging communication orders; the changing roles of actors and stakeholders; the challenge of embedding rights and values in regulatory arrangements; the intersection of technology and policy; and the need to rethink epistemologies and methodologies for researching this field.

Contributions from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds include provocative think pieces and longer analyses. All chapters are grounded in historically-aware understandings of contemporary transformations, while anticipating dynamics of our communication futures."

🧵 Thread on AI and Big Tech Dominance

Big Tech's grip on AI is undeniable. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google are not just tech giants; they're the backbone of AI development and deployment. Most AI startups and labs depend on their infrastructure.

This concentration of power in AI isn't just a market issue; it's a democratic one. Relying on a few corporate giants for essential AI infrastructure raises concerns about democracy, culture, and individual agency.

Remember Cambridge Analytica? It's one example of the risks posed by concentrated AI power. This setup creates vulnerabilities and systemic risks, as noted by SEC chair Gary Gensler. 📉🔒

Even open-source AI initiatives, like Meta's LLaMA-2 or Eleuther's Pythia, can't fully break free from industry concentration. The term "open-source AI" is complex and varied in its meaning. 🔓

The AI industry's business model heavily relies on cloud profits for Big Tech. AI services are often bundled with cloud infrastructure, reflecting a dependency that's hard to break.

Regulation could be a solution, but it often ends up reinforcing Big Tech's power. Microsoft's recent £2.5 billion investment in UK cloud infrastructure is a prime example of this dynamic. 💰

Big Tech companies are using their economic and political clout to maintain dominance. From lobbying efforts to strategic investments, they're actively shaping AI policies and regulations. 🏛️💪

AI's future is heavily influenced by Big Tech's infrastructure and policy maneuvers. This dominance poses challenges for market competition, democratic values, and the shaping of AI's ethical and societal impacts.

Jeez - our media in the UK are getting worse and worse at (not) reporting what is happening in the rest of Europe. For instance, last July the EU announced a really stunning, forward thinking and radical New European #Innovation Agenda. Not a word about it in the UK. Shocking.

Smart meters mean that people cannot not pay for energy. Like in the UK where energy operators used the technology to... remotely switch the meters to prepayment scheme. Do you think it could be abused? "Before smart meters existed, energy firms would have to get a warrant to enter your home and physically install a prepayment meter" bbc.com/news/business-63554879
