"National's racist and divisive Treaty Principles Bill was just voted down by the House, 112 to 11."
@norightturnnz, April 10, 2025
Good news, but not surprising. The challenge now is to push for full recognition if Tino Rangatiratanga in our constitutional arrangements. Cancelling and preventing all the policy that implicitly accepts the lies about Te Tiriti encoded in that bill.
OK, so the results are in. Growing potatoes in a felt bag was good. The yield wasn't amazing but we got probably 4-5 times as many potatoes out of the six seed ones we planted in the bag.
-
The clear winner were those we planted in the ground. I've never seen potatoes this big before in my life. Absolute monsters! We planted five agria seed potatoes and came out with easily five times that amount of monstrous bastards.

Nau mai ki te tau hōu Pākehā, e hoa mā. Along with books, I love gardening (I'm not very disciplined, so I probably like the idea of it more than the doing).
-
For Father's Day 2024, my kids gave me a felt growing bag with six compartments and some bags of compost. I grabbed a bag of agria seed potatoes from Mitre 10 Mega. I filled the felt bag with a mix of compost and basic potting mix with a seed potato in each compartment.
-
After digging through three of the compartments, we have new potatoes! From three seed potatoes, a small abundance. Success!
-
I've never been successful growing potatoes before and was wary of whether this would be successful, being that I placed the bag on a concrete patio in an unsheltered position. The felt bag is black and would absolutely bake in the sun. But the proof's in the pudding.
-
Many rads I know are equally enamored with gardening. There's something about growing your own kai, exercising your personal sovereignty, gradually removing some of your needs from the State and its industrial food system. I encourage everyone to grow some food. It feels awesome!

I wonder how it might change the discourse around "Co-Governance" if we gave expanded it to the phrase it implies; Cooperative Governance".
"Sovereignty debate sees major parties weighing in for first time."

2 weeks ago I posted a thread on English translations of Te Tiriti o Waitangi;
https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/112812076794207293
... in which I pointed out that far from giving special rights to Māori, as ACT and other critics claim, Te Tiriti guaranteed tino rangatiratanga to all the peoples of this country.
So honouring the treaty means returning to a confederal system. Where central government power is limited and delegated from local government, not the other way round.

I just stumbled upon this article on Wikipedia;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_Government
... which as it stands leans heavily into what is arguably a minority interpretation of the founding of New Zealand and its constitutional relationship with Māori, pushed by groups like Hobson's Pledge, the publishers of Investigate magazine, and the ACT and NZ First parties.

Big mihi to Aleisa and Matua Nick Roskruge who I met today when I dropped into the Tāhuri Whenua: National Māori Vegetable Growers Collective office here in Te Papaioea today to pick up a copy of 'The Kūmara Vine' by Aunty Arohanui Lawrence.
-
Making new connections is the best part of life and Aleisa threw in some kamokamo and hue kākano. Matua Nick gave me a Matakoura kūmara to sample as well. Awesome people!
-
And as always a mihi to my fellow swamp anarchist @helenmlehndorf who clued me in on this book via the 'Gram.

I just signed the campaign: Protect Te Aka Whai Ora
It would mean a lot to me if you could also add your name to this important issue. Every name that is added builds momentum around the campaign and makes it more likely for us to get the change we want to see.
Will you join me by taking action on this campaign?
After you've signed the petition, please take a moment to share it with others.

The first time ever, I was at Waitangi on Waitangi day. Attended the dawn service. What was really special was the different languages: Samoan, Tongan, Mandarin, Arabic, and Te Reo Māori of course.
I loved being here.
