Torus Release New Single And Video ‘Ruby Red’

Milton Keynes based heavyweights Torus continue their rebirth as a duo as we head into 2026 with a brand new single titled ‘Ruby Red’. Capturing the band at their most intense and vulnerable, ‘Ruby Red’ is built on epic fuzzed out guitars and a driving hypnotic groove.

“On this new single we explore themes of obsession, emotional damage and losing control when you love too hard,” explains drummer Jack Orr. “The lyrics are raw and direct, channelling desert rock weight with modern grungy tension. This release continues our run of singles leading into our next EP, pushing the darker, heavier side of Torus.”

For the video, the band went with something more light-hearted as a juxtaposition to the songs heartfelt emotional feel, but also something that would match the frantic pace of the song.

“After throwing ideas around with our ex bassist ‘Harry Quinn’ who filmed the video, we decided to lean into the wacky old Beatles short film vibe and do something fun that would show off our personalities a bit more, with the ridiculous quest of trying to find the magic milk from the sacred cow that would heal us from all of our wrongdoings mixed with a brutally honest relationship driven song that had to be made in that moment heading towards a slightly darker side,” explains singer and guitarist Alfie Glass.

It has been a long, winding journey of ups and some downs that led Torus to the eventual release of their accomplished debut self-titled album in the summer of 2024. The album was critically acclaimed (“a heavy listen, but packed with immediately accessible tunes,” said Kerrang!) and allowed Torus the opportunity to hit the road with respected acts such as South Arcade, Skindred, Fu Manchu, Entitled Sons and Soap, alongside a formidable appearance at the legendary Desertfest in London.

However, 2025 saw Torus embark on a new era for the band, with the departure of original bassist Harry Quinn and the decision, for now, to proceed as a duo. Jack and Alfie quickly got to work on new songs and jams in this new format and this period of intense creativity has resulted in a flood of new material, so expect a lot of essential new music from Torus over the coming months!

‘Ruby Red’ is released on the band’s own label Headcharge Records. Headcharge Club was founded to support and uplift the music scene in Milton Keynes, Northampton, and the surrounding areas. It has been driving the grassroots movement locally by putting on DIY events and festivals, helping to build and strengthen the community.

UK rock band Torus unveil their latest single, “Solitary,” marking a fresh chapter after lineup changes. Originally a bedroom project by Alfie Glass, the Milton Keynes trio embrace raw energy blending desert rock, psychedelic prog, and punk. “Solitary” was co-produced with Louis Perry and recorded during lockdown, merging crushing riffs, ethereal melodies, and introspective lyrics. The track explores isolation, lost connections, and resilience, capturing a balance of heaviness and accessibility. With dynamic production and organic performances, Torus retain their signature intensity while expanding sonic horizons. “Solitary” demonstrates the duo’s renewed creative vigor and sets the tone for future releases.

Revolutionary #Volutes

The two large blue circles at the bottom marked with A and B are from the floor plan for #ModernIonicCapital shown in https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/807782440025967685. The larger one has a radius of 296 units, while the smaller one is 16 less, at 280. Both are centered at x = 416. Both are then rotated ±45° about the column axis to give us the four red circles. The small blue circle with radius 120 units is for the column neck.

The two red circles in the back are shown extruded vertically as cylinders. The other two haven't yet been extruded because we want to see the rest of the structure from the front.

The two tube or #torus-like structures are obtained by revolving the trimmed #spiral #volute outlines from https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/808043616946914228 about the vertical axis located at x = 416. Only the bottom tube maintains the interior shape of the spiral.

With this setup, vertically extrude the two remaining red curves in the front so they are at least as high as the top of the upper tube.

Next, perform a #booleanDifference between the top tube and the two extrusions marked A. Keep the wedge shape of the top tube on the left side and discard the remaining portion of the tube from the right.

Then, perform a boolean difference between the bottom tube and the two extrusions marked B. With the wedge shape of the bottom tube on the left side, perform a further #booleanIntersection with the two extrusions marked A. This will produce two curved spirals that are 16 units thick. Discard the remaining portions of the bottom tube as well as all the red extrusions.

After these operations, we are left with one wedge shape with curved faces and two spirals that are 16 units thick, also with curved faces.

The next step is to convert the outer surface of the wedge shape from convex to concave.

Somehow whenever I need to research something about tori (just the relative straightforward 3D kind, although right now self intersecting), they want to give me a headache. I just want to know whether a point is on the lemon or apple part of the spindle torus (yes these are the official names), I need neither quantum physics nor higher dimensions nor spiritual uses of tori #math #torus

Classic #IonicCapital #Tectonic Surfaces Plan

We already made the 8 unit tall #fillet at the bottom of the #capital a part of the #shaft in https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/791794072490907090. So, excluding that, the remainder of the capital is 14 parts or 112 units tall, for the bottom half of which we use the #revolve operation (like the #columnBase and #columnShaft), and for the top half we use the #extrude operation (like the #pedestal, #entablature, and #plinth).

Starting at the bottom, we have an #astragal that is 2 parts or 16 units tall and has the same profile as a #reed and #torus, falling in between the two in terms of size. The arc AD is shown in gray because it is an invisible #virtualSurface that envelops the decorations like #eggsAndDarts on the #ovolo. This is the measurement that is given in #Scarlata's #PracticalArchitecture, but it makes no mention of the #decorative and #tectonic surfaces. Arc BC with a radius of 4 parts or 32 units is the tectonic surface on which the Ovolo decorations rest. Such decorations have a variable or uneven surface which may not exceed 1 part or 8 units.

Points E and F mark the horizontal tangent or maxima of the second spiral and the first (outermost) spiral, respectively. The gap between them is exactly 4 parts or 32 units. GH is the profile for the vertical side surface on which part of the #ribbon and #braid lie flat, protruding exactly 6 units to coincide with the invisible virtual flat surface through EF.

The #cymaReversa is 2 parts or 16 units tall and 1.5 parts or 12 units wide. It starts 4 units to the right of F and stops 4 units short of the top fillet, which is one part or 8 units tall and 20 parts or 160 units from the #columnAxis.

Of the 4 parts or 32 units between G and H, the lower 3 parts or 24 units are part of the #voluteChannel groove and the top 1 part or 8 units is a fillet that follows the curve of the #volute and progressively gets narrower until it converges with the #eye of the volute.

Both #Vignola base and #Attic base have the same square footprint of 400 units x 400 units. The #plinth for both is 48 units (6 parts, or µ/3) tall, and the total height for both is 144 units (18 parts, or exactly µ). As such, they are easily interchangeable.

In the Vignola variant, we start at the plinth with a #fillet 2 units tall and a classic #scotia 18 units tall gouging out part of the fillet.

Then there is another fillet 2 units tall, followed by two #reeds, each 8 units tall, followed by another classic scotia as described above.

This is followed by yet another fillet 2 units tall and topped off with a #torus 40 units tall. A Torus is the same as a reed, except larger. When we reach the neck of the shaft, we will see another molding called #Astragal which has the same profile as reed and torus, but sits in the middle in size. Think of reed, astragal, and torus as small, medium, and large of the same profile.

The modern Attic variant is more elegant with fewer moldings. It also gives the impression of more heft for more stately columns. It starts at the plinth with a torus 36 units tall, followed by a fillet 4 units tall, followed by a modern scotia 24 units tall, followed by another fillet 4 units tall, and topped off with another torus 28 units tall.

As in the construction of #IonicEntablature [https://pixelfed.social/p/Splines/791013152244518907], split the construction of the #columnBase into two steps.

Just as we extruded #dentils separately, we extrude the plinth separately. First draw a square 400x400 in the top view. Then extrude the square 48 units in the front view.

For the rest of the base, we need a new 3D operation — #revolve around an axis. Instead of extruding the #primaryProfileCurve, we revolve it around the #columnAxis, and cap the #planarHoles on both ends before performing a #booleanUnion with the plinth. Finally check edges of the solid for #nakedEdges and #nonManifoldEdges.
