The new single is out!
The Zaramutas – Big Steps
Given the current state of the world, the music scene needs politically charged music more than ever. Good music has always been a catalyst for social change, and these are the moments when The Zaramutas’ new single comes in handy. “Big Steps“ carries everything you ever needed from a proper alternative rock banger. Captivating vocal performance, heavy riffs, and excellent drumming are just some of the qualities this London-based duo packs in their music, but as is usually the case, there’s always more lurking beneath the surface. Lyrically, “Big Steps“ is a call for unity, pointing out that only collective strength, resistance, and forward motion brings social changes and a better life for all. The band expertly navigates important themes that tackle all aspects of society through wisely crafted, sharp, direct lyrics. The band packs a lot of emotion, setting the mood for contemplation about important topics that tackle each one of us. Therefore, it’s a highly relatable composition that will immediately resonate with the crowd. Sonically, The Zaramutas expertly blend many complementary rock subgenres in order to deliver an impactful experience. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind first, as the fundamental elements of this genre dominate throughout the entire composition, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from the heavy rock, hard rock, stoner, sludge, and other similar styles. The Zaramutas use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to elevate their music to an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining true to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with various subgenres resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging, and powerful track that will unquestionably appeal to anyone who appreciates heavy music performed straight from the heart.
Photo courtesy of the band.As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how all those colossal guitar riffs shape a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. The band wisely, tastefully, and expertly stacked each riff to serve as a colossal wall of sound that prevents this song from being mellow for even a second. Besides all the rawness, abrasiveness, and aggression delivered by packing generous servings of distortion, “Big Steps“ also carries so many melodies due to the complexity of those guitar riffs. It’s nearly mindblowing how the aggression and harmony work together here, as they build a perfect atmosphere for channeling important themes through lyrics. There are layers and layers of guitars recorded for a maximum impact, but the distortion is perfectly controlled in this case, preventing everything from being chaotic. The marvelous, soulful, passionate, emotive, and powerful vocal performance acts as a centerpiece of this composition, delivering a meaningful message, commanding attention, elevating everything to new heights, and guiding listeners through each segment of the song. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything The Zaramutas intended to achieve with this song. Besides decorating all the segments and instrumentations, these vocal harmonies also contribute more than necessary emotional depth and complexity to an already intricate song structure. The vocal and guitar pair harmoneously from scratch to finish, making “Big Steps“ such a memorable listening experience worth repeating over and over again.
Besides guitars, you’ll also notice some additional synth maneuvers, something like mellotron, theremin, or guitar synth effect, decorating particular segments. It gives this song more artsy, avant-garde, experimental vibes while still remaining grounded in alternative rock. Of course, this composition wouldn’t sound this good without the equally impressive rhythm section. You’ll hear how warm-sounding basslines lurk beneath all those guitars, offering more heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaneously acting like a binding element between the mentioned instrumentations and rhythmic patterns. The exceptional drumming performance, based upon cleverly arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, keeps everything in line while dictating groove and pace. Each hit of the snare, kick of the bass drum, accentuation on the hi-hat, and splash over the cymbal cuts through the ambiance, making this song even more groovy, dynamic, powerful, and detailed. As you can see, each instrument plays a significant role here, making this track worth repeating over and over again. “Big Steps” is one of the finest heavy alternative rock tracks you’ll hear this year, and it will easily become one of your favorite songs as well. It packs tremendous energy, aggression, but also harmony, melody, and control, proving that alternative rock music still has so much to offer. The Zaramutas break all the rules and shapeshift the boundaries by experimenting with so many rock subgenres, and with so many qualities showcased through their clever songwriting, brilliant ideas, and marvelous musicianship, “Big Steps“ showcases a fresh, unique, exciting, memorable version of modern rock. Therefore, head to your favorite streaming platform and listen to it loud!

@nextcloud You are positioning #Nextcloud as a #european #alternative to Microsoft Office et al. and I understand your point (and I'm using your software, and not Microsoft's).
But how come that you are heavily relying on Microsoft/Github infrastructure instead of using a european or self-hosted alternative? Wouldn't it be most plausible to move away from Github?
MIDLAKE
The Trials Of Van Occupanther
2022 UK reissue
Gold vinyl
A long (but fun) day of Christmas shopping ends with an undeniable musical masterpiece.
This is an astonishing album on every level; a living, breathing, melancholic work of art that, somehow, is still underrated.
I’d put this against ANY of the great, breathtaking albums of the 2000s. It would stand toe to toe with ANY of them.
“Roscoe” is one of the great opening tracks of any album EVER; a glorious starting line to an album that just gets better and better as it proceeds.
I’m still shocked and appalled by the number of hardcore music nerds that don’t know about this gem.
If you don’t know it… get to.
Tell em yer Uncle Ape sent you.

Hermetic Delight – Vagabond Melodies
Hermetic Delight’s new release, Vagabond Melodies, is the audio equivalent of throwing a dart at a map and just driving until the gas tank runs empty. This record doesn’t follow any logical instructions, because it carries nine songs born purely out of instinct and suspended moments, like the random, perfect pictures you take on a long journey that, when you look back, somehow tell the whole story. This whole album is like a vision that just materialized. It wasn’t some pre-planned concept or a committee decision. It sounds like an unexplainable certainty, etched into the air before the band even picked up their instruments. It has this incredible blend of being super tender and totally unbothered by what anyone in the industry might expect. Coming out of Strasbourg, France, and Ankara, Turkey, the band is constantly dealing in shifts, soft retreats followed by sharp waves, and they handle every turn with this beautiful, unscripted grace. The structure of Vagabond Melodies is what keeps you totally hooked. The flow moves in jolts. It’s direct pop music that hits you sharply, but with this great elegance, and it is always, always pulsing with life. You can hear their history woven in here. They used to get caught up in that push-pull between shoegaze haze and straight-up noise rock. Their sound has always occupied that sweet spot between the raw, immediate punch of great garage bands and the shimmering, atmospheric dreaminess of true art-pop masters.
This new record is the culmination of their evolution as a band. It’s tighter, more direct, and definitely more grounded than anything they’ve done before. The core conflict between noise and pop is still there, but now it’s more focused than ever before. The absolute key to this beautiful chaos is the band itself, and how they interact. First, Zeynep Kaya’s acts as a constant guide. Her voice serves as a the main melody, wrapping around the sound and carrying the emotional weight. It pulls tight when the song gets anxious and stretches out when it floats into space. She’s the reason the direct pop hits you right in the chest, acting as the consistent human element across the whole unpredictable journey. Then you have Delphine Padilla on drums. This is where the energy comes from as she brings a massive, controlled drive to the rhythms. Every hit feels free, like a piece of choreography. She’s the engine, giving the album more forward motion and that necessary sense of travel. Her groove is what makes the vagabond feeling completely real. Next up, Atef Aouadhi handles the guitars and bass works are more than impressive. He makes the instruments have a conversation. Sometimes the tones are sharp and demanding, sometimes they’re totally clear and spacious. He’s constantly carving out room around Zeynep’s voice and guiding the tracks through their shifts. His bass work anchors the album, giving it a physical presence, while the guitars provide all the necessary spark, tension, and noise. And don’t overlook the synths. They flare up or withdraw at the perfect moment. They unsettle the vibe just enough to keep you focused, or they light up the track with a sudden, beautiful shimmer. They are the unplanned detours, the elements of surprise that instantly shift the entire mood of the song.
Hermetic Delight has this fantastic habit of locking onto a core musical idea, a motif, and obsessing over it, letting it repeat, almost hypnotically. They do this even while the guitars get noisier or the synths go wild around it. That technique grounds the song, gives it serious emotional depth, and makes the sudden pop moments feel incredibly free and earned. Vagabond Melodies is an album that thrives on change. You get the loud, confident tracks, the sharp waves and direct pop hits, but you also get the quiet moments that dissolve into atmosphere, or should we say, soft retreats. The band moves through all this with pure instinct and total confidence, never following a script. This material is definitive proof that Hermetic Delight has found their true voice. They’ve expertly blended sophisticated art pop with genuine, leveled indie rock energy. It’s a fascinating, ethereal, tender masterpiece, and you should immediately check it out. Do not miss this gem!
