The Historic City of Trogir, Croatia 2013

Why is Trogir a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

"Criterion (ii): Trogir demonstrates the influence of the various cultures in the Adriatic from its original settlement – Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Hungarian and Venetian, exemplified through its town planning from the Greek period onwards, and the architecture of its buildings, whether Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance or Baroque. In terms of space and population Trogir is a miniature city, but its significance for the cultural and economic history of the Adriatic outweighs its restricted urban scale. Its institutions, its way of life, and its contribution to national and universal culture and science make it one of the most important Adriatic towns.

Criterion (iv): Trogir is an excellent example of a medieval town built on and conforming with the layout of a Hellenistic and Roman city that has conserved its urban fabric to an exceptional degree and with the minimum of modem interventions, in which the trajectory of social and cultural development is clearly visible in every aspect of the townscape." --- UNESCO website

My photos of the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence in the historic City of Trogir (UNESCO), Croatia 2013

"It was built on the foundations of an Early Christian cathedral destroyed in the 12th century during the sack of the town by the Saracens in 1123. The building of the cathedral began in 1213 and finished during the 17th century. Like the older one, it is also dedicated to St. Lawrence (Sveti Lovre) but it is better known as St. John's Cathedral (Sveti Ivan) after bishop John, who died in 1111 and stood out for his saintly lifestyle at a time when the Hungarian King Koloman had taken over Dalmatia and Croatia. Most of the work in the construction of the cathedral took place in the 13th century, being largely completed in 1251. This means the building is mainly in Romanesque style, whilst the vault inside is gothic as it was built during the 15th century, in Mannerist style." -- Wikipedia

Many people visiting Split miss out on seeing neighboring Trogir. Originally a Greek settlement, Trogir has the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex in Central Europe.

Bijaći (: Santa Marta) is a village in , 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northeast of , at the contact point between the Trogir part and the Lower part of the Velo field. It was first mentioned in two old Croatian documents from AD 852 (Byaci) and AD 892 (Biaci). At the locality of Stombrate are the remains of an early Croatian church of St. Martha, mentioned in 1197. It is a three-nave structure with an angular apse and a bell tower on the front.

🪔 For #SpoliaSunday: a little hidden gem in #Trogir, Croatia: the St Barbara Church.Built in 9-10 c AD, it is the oldest church of the city. Its main portal is made with parts of a sarcophagus, while ancient Corinthian columns inside are likely dated to the 2nd century AD. 📸 me

A (nearly-) empty early-morning street in Trogir, Croatia.

Trogir, Croatia is located not far from the city of Split. (It is not too far from the Split airport, as any visitor will note after watching and listening to planes on approach over the town.) It is a very old town and quite a striking place, with buildings and narrow streets constructed from local stone. Its history goes back over 2000 years, and these days it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a well-known location from the Game of Thrones franchise and, not doubt partly as a result, a very popular place with tourists. The latter can be an issue, especially in such a small town, and during the daytime it can be really crowded... continues: gdanmitchell.com/2023/09/10/tr

Today's photo with the mots hits: this curious graffito on the Cathedral of St Lawrence, Trogir, Croatia.

It shows what appears to be a Venetian state galley (?)

Good afternoon from #Trogir, #Croatia. Gorgeous weather, lovely little town with lots of very typical medieval architecture for the region. Off to lunch now then having a nose around #Split.

Medieval castle set back from a wide promenade under blue sky and bright sunshine. Some people are walking along the promenade. A couple of flags are flying from two towers. One tower is square while the other looks octagonal.
