Here's another, and a work-around - large media files in posts. If I go to a post from an instance I dont often visit, images etc may be missing. Not a lot happens for several minutes, even if I repeatedly attempt to load the image.

Today I found a #workaround for two #mastodon mis-features that have annoyed me every now and then:

- Inability to tag only part of a word
- Inability to separate #hashtag​s using slashes

The magic that powers these workarounds are #unicode
#zerowidthspace​s/​#ZWS:

Place one inside of a tagged word and everything after it is no longer part of the tag.

Place one after a slash and it no longer inhibits tag detection.
(Also works for closing parens – the other special char with this property.)

Got an app that's installed on an old device and refuses to install on a new one (e.g. it was discontinued)? As of November 2025:

* On your old device:
* Install an APK exporter (such as https://f-droid.org/en/packages/axp.tool.apkextractor/)
* Copy the APK off the device
* On your new device
* Copy the APK into storage
* Install APK Explorer & Editor (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.apk.editor/)
* Open the app and click "APK's[sic]" at the bottom
* Click "Select from storage" and select the file
* Click the compass symbol next to the tabs at the top
* Select "Simple Decompile (faster)"
* Click the folder symbol at the bottom
* Click AndroidManifest.xml
* Click `android:minSdkVersion` and `android:targetSdkVersion` and set them to 29
* Click "Save"
* Click the hammer at the top-right (yes, it's clickable!)
* Click "Build"
* It should give a green tick. Click "Install"
* If you're prompted about "Harmful app blocked", expand the "More Details" expander and click "Install anyway"
* Don't send the app to Google (or do, so that they can see that it's fine - but as you're the only one installing it then it's kinda pointless!)
* Wait for installation to complete

Note: This is ONLY safe because you copied the APK from your old device. Otherwise, pay attention to the harmful app warnings!

Spine crack and #workaround

In spite of telling a customer we don't have scoring equipment and any #ink that isn't a super light shade would #crack, they wanted to see it. Upon agreeing it's bad, I thought of a possible #solution by intentionally creating a white line down the #spine #fold. Customer was happy. And I am happy that I can show this photo to future customers instead of printing a sample I know they won't like.

Now that FreeTube seems to be a dead product (no support, bug reporting locked & player wont play), I've found a workaround to get YouTube to play videos again in Browser without Ads & without constant rebuffering while using an Adblocker:

- When you find the video you want to watch, copy the URL & log out of YT, then open the URL & play it as normal (it's the biometrics scraper script YT uses that causes the rebuffering but it's not loaded in non-logged-in sessions).

If the SANE modules still have that known bug where it spits out "FAILED TO SCAN", use the non-free vuescan to trick it into working.
Install the flatpak of it, do a preview or a scan (it puts a fucked up overlay on the scan once saved), then close it.
Run simplescan (either via flatpak or what's provided in your distro) and it should then scan without any problems.

My #dotfiles are turning into an exercise in testing for features and degrading gracefully when they are absent.

While working around the “don’t change your wallpaper unless you like screen freeze” behavior in #sway on #FreeBSD, I discovered that installing certain software packages related to #amateurradio force the #waybar package to deinstall. Instead of digging into the nature of the incompatibility with the eventual goal of having both, I chose to work around it by using #m4. #Macros that test whether certain executables exist, and define other macros based on the results. Then ifdef() and #bobsyouruncle.

It’s nice that this is possible, with a minimum of tools. Not always easy to read, but possible.

Why the #workaround? Mostly because I always want a status bar of some sort, regardless of whether the computer’s role relates to amateur radio. And I want those bits of amateur radio functionality present on the machine, even if they are seldom used.

Yes, I could probably find a way to use the #ports collection to compile with exactly the right flags and make everything work. It might be educational. It probably won’t be enjoyable.
