Establishing the right partnerships with #FirstNations is an investment decision.

The Canadian government got this years ago. First Nations have played a central role in that country’s clean energy transition for two decades.

By the end of 2020, Indigenous communities in Canada had become among the most powerful clean energy proponents, on par with utilities and renewable energy development companies, driven by Indigenous people, governments and industry working together to find solutions.

And now, the #US government’s #InflationReductionAct provides specific funding and a range of incentives specifically supporting Tribal nations and Native communities to participate as owners of projects, accelerating First Nations equity in major energy projects to help meet the world’s demand for clean technology at an unprecedented scale.

Opportunities in #Australia exist now to get the settings rights.

With Australia’s Energy Ministers committing to the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy, we have a process in place to ensure “First Nations people help drive the energy transformation”.

When done right, we all benefit.

Hey, clean energy companies. Don't fall into the trap!

No one wants to repeat the mistakes of the fossil fuel mining industry.

Now is the perfect time to reset relationships, and to properly consult First Nations leaders before developing renewable energy projects on their land.

The First Nations Clean Energy Network have developed a guide to assist you: 'Best Practice Principles for Clean Energy Projects'.

There's ten best practice principles that should underpin all agreements for land use and benefit sharing between First Nations groups, companies and investors.

You can find the guide on their website. firstnationscleanenergy.org.au

Are renewable energy companies at risk of falling into the same pattern that has plagued the resource extraction and fossil fuel industries before it?

The First Nations Clean Energy Network has recognised this as a potential issue, and has developed guides to assist the clean energy industry negotiate well with First Nations people.

You can find them on their website here lnkd.in/g9fuDcDU

Here’s an interesting #Reuters article by Sarah LaBrecque that explores some of the issues. reuters.com/default/why-solar-

How should Indigenous people participate in the clean energy transition?

1. Energy is an essential service. We should all have the same level of access to affordable, reliable and clean power, no matter where we live in this country.

2. Indigenous participation needs to occur in the design, construction and operation of energy projects.

3. There must be free, prior and informed consent for projects on Indigenous lands.

That's First Nations Clean Energy Network Steering Group member Ruby Heard talking.

Sounds right!

Original Power are doing great things in clean energy installation with First Nations people in the Northern Territory.

This week they turned the new, standalone solar and battery system on at Twenty Mile outstation on Garrwa Country, just outside Borroloola, Northern Territory.

The install took just 3 days with their crack team of local solar trainees.

Twenty Mile is the first of ten Borroloola region homelands where Original Power will work with residents and local Aboriginal homelands resource agency Mabunji to transition from diesel generators to solar over the next year.

They are investing in the future of homelands where families like the Andersons at Twenty Mile are keeping culture strong through home-schooling on country. One benefit is that the kids there can learn without a noisy diesel generator in the background.

First Nations Traditional owners have the right to free, prior informed consent (FPIC) about business activities impacting their traditional lands and territories.

Associate Professor Hannah McGlade from Curtin University is reflecting on Traditional owners lodging human rights complaints against 12 banks over their involvement in Santos Ltd' $4.7 billion Barossa gas project.

Complaints were received by Commonwealth Bank, Westpac Group, ANZ, NAB, and nine international banks and three international Export Credit Agencies.

Hannah says "these are cutting edge human rights issues, reflecting a growing awareness and increasing realisation of the rights of Indigenous people that banks and corporations need to be fully cognisant of.

"States should be enforcing these rights through appropriate legislation and effective enforcement with the participation of Indigenous people."

A price cap of $7/GJ for domestic gas allows for all gas fields in eastern Australia to make profits over and above a return on equity, with some gas fields highly profitable at this level.

The Australian government has instead chosen $12/GJ as the gas capped price.

#IEEFA's LNG/gas analyst Bruce Robertson says $12/GJ is simply not reasonable and is 70% above a fair price.

NEW ANALYSIS: The approval for the #UK's new Cumbria coal mine makes little sense.

The assumption the mine will meet demand from the steel industry runs counter to leading steel firms attempts to deploy new clean production technologies.

Little of the new coal will be used by UK steelmakers, who are making it clear they want government support to transition away from coal in order to remain competitive.

If the UK government wants to maintain a domestic primary steelmaking capacity, it will need to provide financial support to the major producers to transition, undermining the rationale for the mine’s approval.

It already seems clear that little of the coal from the new #Cumbria mine will be used by the UK steel industry.

But if the government moves to support the steel sector’s transition away from coal – as #Europe is already doing – then approval for the new coal mine makes even less sense.

A massive transition has occurred in the U.S. electric power system in the past 3 years.

Wind and solar have more than matched the growth in U.S. generation, and are pushing fossil fuels—especially coal—off the grid.
