In the past few days I’ve seen talk about RAM prices shooting up due to demand from big datacenters.

Today I read that a historic brand like Crucial - I own plenty of their hardware, including SSDs - is dropping consumer products to focus on gear for those same datacenters.
The result (or maybe the intention?) is to push people away from self hosting, undermine the OwnYourData idea and make everyone depend on huge datacenters for life.

So much for owning your data.
So much for decentralisation.

Because taking down one giant datacenter is far easier than taking down thousands or millions of individual nodes.

Friends and colleagues, don’t trade your freedom for a bit of convenience. Once you give it away, getting it back is very hard.

Always Own Your Data.

Little fun challenge!
First attempt at writing the biáng character, which is a type of noodle in Shaanxi cuisine. Deemed the most complex "genuine" Chinese character with its 58 strokes. Full of flaws but not too bad for a first I guess.
Next challenge: an "artistic" character made of 172 strokes. Wish me luck!

WIP
Been working on this one for a long time already, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the process.

Work in progress of a mandala art piece. There are 2 black paper squares on a white page, and 3 mandalas, white on black and black on white. Two of the three mandalas spread across both black and white paper, giving a sensation of volume and depth.

Vancouver Public Library, taking your knowledge to greater heights.

One of my fav places. I just recently rediscovered the joy of spending time there after not going for so long.
They offer so many great free events and workshops. And I love hanging out there to work on my creative projects.
Public libraries are the best! And the VPL central branch is an architectural gem on top of it!

Inside the Vancouver Public Library. Picture taken from an upper floor looking down at the curved side wall galleries. People sitting at desks, working. All the way down is a non-public space filled with dozens of carts filled with books to be sorted. A great sense of height comes out of the picture.

Bird Singing In The Bamboos
March 2024

From a Gongbi painting class. Someday, maybe, I'll be able to paint realistic scenes myself, but for now, I traced from an existing drawing, directly with the brush, and then coloured before sharpening some lines again.

A painting in Chinese Gongbi style on rice paper, representing a bird singing while standing on a bamboo stem. The bird is grey and pale green, with the bamboo leaves going from dark green at the base to lighter green to yellowish green at the tip. The bird occupies the top left of the painting, while the bamboos are more centre. Signature at the bottom left says Anna in Chinese.

@elena inspiring! I'm very far from where you are, but I'm teaching myself CSS and HTML so I can personalize my website (running on write.as) as much as possible. Since I started diving into the Fediverse and GAFAM alternatives a few years ago, I got really interested in coding and how things work. I'm really on the surface of things still, but I find it quite empowering. So it's inspiring to read about your journey :)

The Heron & The Koi Man
October 2022

A very loose interpretation of a scene at the Dr Sun Yat-Sen classical Chinese garden in Vancouver, BC.

#art #arts #VisualArts #drawing #pen #watercolormarker #nature #chinesegarden #heron #koi #ChinesePainting #寫意 #xieyi

A classical Chinese garden scene. The whole drawing is done with black marker pen with only splashes of colors (green and red). In the foreground, a plum tree with its red flowers. Beside the tree a Great Pacific heron is observing the koi fish in the pond. The pond is green like the color of jade with some red plum petals at the surface. On the other side of the pond, an old bearded man, seated under a pine tree, is feeding the koi. In the background, on a higher level, a Ting with its curved up roof. The whole drawing is very simple and does not follow realistic accuracy in terms of proportions and perspective. It's not done with traditional Chinese painting techniques, however it is attempting to follow the Chinese aesthetic principle of negative space. The drawing does not fill the entire canvas.
