@mattcen Will sliding sync help with cases like this or is that only for client <-> server syncs?

I tried out the iOS ElementX against my own self-hosted Synapse with the sliding sync proxy and it works great!

@markstos I’m unsure but if you really want to deep dive, you could probably search for ‘access’ in the Valhalla routing code here and see how it treats it!

I've just started a new project, also known as a hobby - All Melbourne Stations!

Definitely inspired by @Sydney_Stations, I'll be visiting every station in Melbourne, and maybe Victoria, and sharing my travels with Mastodon.

Welcome new Mastodon users!
Please reach out if you’d like recommendations of folks to follow on a particular interest you have, or any other questions about the platform! Highly recommend using and following hashtags on your interests - it’s not cringe to use them here (just don’t spam).

I live in Sydney, write about urban planning and urbanism advocacy at jakecoppinger.com among other software side projects, play violin with the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra, survey for OpenStreetMap and take lots of photos.

@walk_sydney

> All scrambles are countdowns in NSW AFAIK

I don’t think this is the case unfortunately, though anecdotally they are more likely to have a countdown.

For example, at Argyle and Church (Parramatta) there is (or at least was) a scramble crossing (white sign with arrows) but no countdown.

I can’t use Google Streetview etc for surveying on OSM unfortunately (legal issues)

@walk_sydney I added the above scramble crossings, most of which I've been to in the past too: overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAk

I'm fairly sure Macquarie and St James station along with Oxford and Grosvenor aren't scramble crossings from memory.

Do you know of any countdown timer intersections (that WalkSydney is 100% sure of) that I could add to OSM? So far I have these: overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAj

Why no Footscray Rd bus lanes?

> Three rail lines closed from the west, and the worst bus delays are precisely where they could allocate bus lanes.

Sydney YIMBY:

sydney.yimby.au/blog/bayside-t

> Bayside Council is rewriting its Local Environment Plan to ban townhouses across the bulk of its residential land. This comes about by removing some Additional Permitted Uses (APUs) that allowed owners to knock down a non-residential use like a warehouse to replace it with townhouses or a small set of residential flats.

> Here’s how it shakes out:

> R2 Low Density Residential: Previously permitted townhouses and residential flats (subject to ordinary height limits), now will permit neither. This zoning covers over 80% of residential area in former Botany Bay Council (which is where the change is operative).

> R3 Medium Density Residential: Previously permitted townhouses and residential flats, now will only permit townhouses. This covers most of the remainder of residential land in that LGA.

The idea of combining housing and transport costs is not widespread in Australia.
"Housing strategies must consider transport when deciding land-use plans and where to develop new housing estates. This more holistic approach would produce better outcomes by reducing cost pressures on households".

The first City of Sydney, Alexander Tzannes designed bench I’ve spotted with metal dividers - in the new Central concourse.

SMH reported in 2015 that the original design is decently comfortable to sleep on - perhaps it was too anti-hostile!

> Self-described "survival artist" Ronny Ng is Sydney's pre-eminent expert on the city's best public seats and benches. After sleeping rough on Sydney's streets for 17 years, he rates the city's new modern furniture as close to perfect.

@Bucket On this topic, I noticed the new concourse at Central that opened has the classic City of Sydney flat timber + curved steel benches (the only non-platform seating at central apart from the main concourse), but with extra steel segments in the middle of the bench to prevent anyone sleeping there

One of the cottages in the middle of our block is for sale, but the listing doesn't do justice to how nice of a development it is in. The layout of Hastings Green puts all the garages for cars in shared structures near the street, and then the only thing that is between the houses are footpaths and gardens. 7071ClintonPortland.cascadehas

View from the street of the paths that go into the block to reach all the homes.Satellite image of Hastings Green. Three of the structures near the driveway on the lower left are garages and the rest of the space (which used to be an orchard) are houses, paths, and shared gardens.

@walk_sydney I've added all the crossings with countdown timers in Sydney (collected via Better Intersections via ODbL) to OpenStreetMap under the `traffic_signals:countdown_green=yes` tag, which you can see a map of here: overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAj

The wiki for the `traffic_signals:countdown` tag in OSM is for timers counting down the red until the green light - so I invented that tag name - open to suggestions from the worldwide OSM community on better tag names for that.

A (very empty) map of scramble crossings is at overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAk, using the `crossing:scramble=yes`.

Please add any other examples you know of either to OSM, or let me know and I can add them.
