Yesterday was the last session of our PhD course on "Degrowth and Socio-ecological justice across disciplines" at the University of Copenhagen, co-organized by two members of our network: @FerRacimo & Rebecca Rutt. After a whole set of lectures discussing #degrowth thinking and the injustices caused by the #capitalist growth paradigm in society, the final session was about #Degrowth in #Academia.

It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss with the students the many crises that affect academia today: How does the capitalist growth paradigm prioritize profit over people in #HigherEducation? How does the managerial class restrict the freedoms of students, faculty and staff to determine what the university is for? What are the colonial roots of the Western university? What would a #postgrowth, #decolonial and #feminist university system look like? And what strategies can get us there?

Like all other sessions, this one featured a civil society guest - in this case, Dr. Laura Horn as representative of the climate movement @ScientistRebellion, who put it succinctly: "There is no research on a dead planet". Borrowing on Sarah Ahmed, she called on students & academics to become "climate killjoys": ‘if questioning an existing arrangement makes people unhappy, we are willing to make people unhappy’.

I'm sorry, did you forget the last 200 years of technological progress advancing productivity yet leading us to work even longer hours? If we want to work less, we need unions, not tech.

Gonna #bike rant a bit.

I built this bike and I LOVE IT. I customized it for my own needs. Why would I not do this? Otherwise I could just buy a floor model and be done with it.

Most notably, the steering tube is longer than it normally would be, because I kept getting frustrated that the bike market only accommodates for two positions:

-very aggressive bent-over-the-handlebars (road/mountain/"serious" bikes--most of them are this)
-very upright (Dutch/beach cruiser/fitness/"fun" bikes--disregarded by "real" "cyclists") (As you can tell, I have opinions.)

So, magic happens, I build this thing, it's great. I've gotten so much crap from "real" "cyclists" because of that steering tube because it's not "how it should be" and it looks "grandmotherly" blah blah blah.

What's most important is if A. It's comfortable for me and I like it because I BUILT THIS BIKE FOR ME, and B. If it's safe. And this buddy went through a safety check at a bike shop, so yes, it is safe.

The amount of people so desperate to conform with something so simple as STEERING TUBE LENGTH is really concerning to me. Not even discussing the ableism (Heaven forbid anyone but those at the height of fitness enjoy the sacred art of riding a bicycle!!!)--is this really the most difficulty people have in their lives that they give half a fig about the length of a piece of metal on MY bike?

And what are the ramifications of a world where any sort of nonconformity is looked down on this horribly?

Yesterday, we returned to Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen, to demand Denmark #BanPrivateJets. And this time, we brought with us some holiday cheers too!

Private jets are the pinnacle of climate, social and economic injustice. They are a privilege of the ultra-rich that - in a climate emergency - we cannot afford.

All we want for Christmas is for private jets to be banned!
