These photos were made with a Soligor 650mm f/8.5 manual focus mirror lens I recently bought for around $90. This particular lens was manufactured in 1983 according to its serial number.

Challenging myself to show detail in an active subject with a manual focus lens made me immediately appreciate the research & development of AutoFocus technology in all of my other lenses. I hope you enjoy these images of the local cardinal pair in the tree outside my window.

I did my best to bring out the full range of detail in the clouds. I like how the tree in the center feels like the upcoming waypoint in a video game, as if a cutscene might play out upon arriving at the base where its roots meet the soil.

The cardinal was back again today! Very good conditions gave me some amazing opportunities to show off his gorgeous details. After about 40 minutes of playing with his reflection, his mate came and picked him up and took him off to better and more important things.
