The first trial of an Australian-developed technology has detected mysterious objects by sifting through signals from space like sand on a beach.

“That’s the equivalent of sifting through a whole beach of sand to look for a single five-cent coin every minute,”

“We’re also detecting long-period transients, which remain mysterious objects within our galaxy. Both fast radio bursts and these transients were first discovered in Australia, so it is great that we’re continuing the path of discovery with this impressive technology,” Dr Wang said.

Are astronomers on the brink of discovering a new celestial object?

Recently, astronomers have been discovering an emerging population of astrophysical objects that resemble neutron stars, but with longer rotation periods. This unique population is challenging our understanding of how these objects form and how they emit radiation.

I got to speak with this exciting new paper’s lead author, Dr Manisha Caleb from The University of Sydney, about this remarkable discovery, which was first found by CSIRO's #ASKAP telescope located in WA.

An enormous ribbon of hydrogen encircling a spiral galaxy called NGC 4632, found with the help of CSIRO's ASKAP radio telescope (also NGC 6156)

It's a 'polar ring galaxy' - where the gas is inclined almost perpendicular to the galaxy's rotation. Likely an old companion galaxy.

Being in Western Australia, which is a bit secluded even from the rest of Oz, makes getting students wanting to come here difficult. I put in 3 undergraduate summer student projects this year in hopes of convincing at least one to come back for a PhD 🤞🤞🤞
