Look, if all I can do right now is post a photo of a house finch demolishing a dandelion, then I'm going to post a photo of a house finch demolishing a dandelion.
You're welcome for my service.

Another one from the archives. This Blue Jay, one of a nearby nest that had several babies last summer, sits perched on a rain gutter, looking like they're just over it (whatever "it" was...maybe their yelly demanding fledglings).

I have a pair of white-crowned sparrows hanging out in my yard right now. Can't recall seeing them hang out in my yard before.

This little beauty had me fooled today. His deep and expansive red colouring had me thinking I had a purple finch gracing my backyard, but on closer scrutiny he's almost certainly a house finch.
I do love my neighbourhood house finches of course, I just can't remember ever seeing them with such intense colouring before!

Very exciting morning for me, birdwatching in my garden. Not only have the Baltimore orioles arrived, but a scarlet tanager appeared in my neighbour’s tree, and I have never seen one of those before at all. Not a great picture, but I’m still excited. #birds #birdwatching #BackyardBirdwatching
The Harris’s sparrows have arrived! #birds #birdwatching #BackyardBirdwatching
White throated sparrows are one of my favourites, and we don’t have them through the winter. So I always am super happy when they become regulars in my yard again. These two were hanging out this morning with me and the house sparrows while I had my coffee outside. A happy start to the day. #birds #backyardBirdwatching #birdwatching
Yep, they like the pond. #birds #backyardBirdwatching
A yellow-bellied sapsucker visited the garden today. I only see these in the yard about once a year. This felt like a reward for being out and working on cleaning up the pond. #birds #birdwatching #BackyardBirdwatching
Good morning from me and this mallard pair, who came over to chill (literally) in my frosty grass. I hope it’s the same pair that visited me every day for weeks last spring. #birds #backyardBirdwatching
And a couple of plump starlings on the Hills hoist clothesline.
The neighbourhood Bluejays have us well trained. One or two of them will sit on the wire outside our back door and skree until we toss some peanuts out for them.
Shortly after another pair shows up to partake in the bounty.
They'll often pick one up, give it a shake, toss it, and then try another, looking for the perfect peanut.
This is what passes for entertainment around here.
I love these birds. 💙

Very exciting Sunday around here - a pileated woodpecker came in for a bite. I knew there was one in the neighborhood, but haven’t seen one since September.
(I included a chickadee on the same feeder for size comparison, for anyone who’s never seen one of these woodpeckers.) #birds #BackyardBirdwatching
The blue jays as usual cleaned me out of peanuts. I love their stained glass colours, and how they’re usually pretty collaborative (taking turns) but occasionally get really bratty with each other. Or greedy - the one pictured in the tree flew back for more, while it still had the peanut it shelled still in its beak! #birdwatching #backyardbirdwatching
I can't see a water-feature of any kind from where we live, But there is (the rather empty) Skanderborg Lake nearby and Mossø a little further away.
Maybe that's why I can see Geese and Swans from the garden sometimes.
Not often though, so I have to have some luck.
Yesterday 3 Canada Goose in between a group of Greylag Goose, and today, during my 30 min. #BackyardBirdwatching 4 Barnacle Goose flying over 🙂
I haven't talked the leaves for several weeks and we have about a six inch thick layer of decaying plant matter all over the garden. I decided to leave it that way. It was a beautiful day today in Portland and I was out on the deck, listening two about two dozen Oregon juncos scrounging around in there. So quiet except for the sounds of their claws and their little tzeet-tzeets. Lovely birds, juncos, so industrious!
With some clear skies today I did 30 min. #BackyardBirdwatching and a 9 km #LowCarbonBirding walk to the local lake.
Not many surprises, but nevertheless 30 species in all. For exemple 13 Yellowhammers, a Goldfinch, 143 Wigeons and 4 Goldeneyes.
But my favourites where these two Whooper Swans flying past the house in the morning. Only the second time I see them this fall. So nice to see these northern guest! 💚
