Blue Jays are synonymous with “attitude”. From their colors to their screeching call, they demand attention.

Edge of the Perch

Here is a sharp image of a Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata). I’m not entirely sure what it was preparing to do, though it likely dropped to the ground a moment later.

If you're enchanted by images of blue jays and other captivating corvids, dive into my photo gallery for a visual treat! Take a peek:

"A Blue Jay stands poised on the edge of a weathered wooden surface, its body angled as if caught mid‑decision—half ready to leap, half intent on whatever has captured its attention below. The bird’s head tilts downward, crest slightly lowered, giving the impression of sharp focus and quiet calculation.

Its plumage is a tapestry of blues: soft sky‑blue along the back, deeper cobalt across the wings, and bold black barring that forms crisp, geometric patterns. The white patches on its face and throat glow against the darker markings, creating a mask‑like contrast that makes the eye appear bright and alert.

The tail is lifted high, fanned just enough to show the alternating bands of blue, black, and white. Sunlight catches the feathers, revealing their fine texture—each one edged with delicate detail.

Behind the bird, the background dissolves into a smooth blur of muted browns and greens, making the Blue Jay the unmistakable center of attention. The shallow depth of field gives the scene a sense of intimacy, as if the viewer is standing only inches away, sharing a quiet moment with a restless, intelligent creature.

The photograph bears the signature “© Swede’s Photographs” in the upper right corner, a subtle mark that doesn’t distract from the bird’s commanding presence." - Microsoft Copilot

Silly me, all this time I was thinking squirrels were eating the peanuts.

Winter Backyard Birding

Black oil sunflower seeds transformed my backyard into a small avian metropolis.

This blue jay was eating bugs from a maple tree branch in the freezing-cold temperatures yesterday! He’s quite resourceful.

Another frigid morning. It went down to -7.5°F (-22C) then reluctantly warmed to -3. Maybe into the 20's today and then a week or more above freezing. What will we do with ourselves? ":^)
Watching birds yesterday and on landing they'd do a quick fluffing shrug, then smoosh that onto feet. The result was a puffier bird, no legs, braced against the cold.

Distant photo zoomed in on a Blue Jay which has just settled onto a branch, fluffed to stay warm for however long it takes for the feeder to clear enough to fly over. The sun is shining weakly on its left side (our right), illuminating the puffy white feathers and putting a glint in its eye. Branches are barren, curved in graceful lines from chasing sunlight when they're in charge of ushering leaves to the best photosynthesis.

Wintering. At -20 C the critters and birds need to stay fed.

@Priyajsridhar
People have also used other creatures like caterpillars -- or bird migration patterns. If I could give any animal the power to predict winter, which would I choose?

I'd pick a bird, like a Blue Jay, and if winter was continuing for 6 six weeks, it would stay blue. If spring was starting--it would turn bright yellow.

I wish this was taken on my camera and not a zoomed in cellphone photo, but I love this pose.
