The Easter Bonnets From the Victorian Era.

In the 19th century, especially during the Victorian era, fashion was highly formal and symbolic. Women wore bonnets regularly, and Easter gave them the chance to showcase a fresh, often elaborate bonnet that reflected the joy and color of spring. It became a social and fashion statement, not just a religious one.

A white bonnet with precious floral embroidery in gold, ornated with sequins and rhinestones. These threads were pure gilded metal.A white bonnet embroidered in colours with silver thread and floral embossed metallic elements. The elements were made in specialised factories. Because these were closed, restorers and conservators nowadays must build such elements from scrap by hand.A precious dark blue satin bonnet with a rich embroidery of gold thread and glass rocailles. The circle of flowers around one big flower and some grain ears symbolised the Tree Of Life, a traditional pattern in Alsatian popular art.Detail of a rocaille embroidery on a black bonnet. Green, red, orange, blue and white beads form flowers. The stitching in parallel rows reminds of the ancient perlage technique used for 3-D flowers in the 19th century wreaths for the dead. This bonnet is a reconstruction made with modern glass rocailles.

On Mastodon and my #blog, I showed you #embroidered treasures from a special exhibition in our #museum and #culturalHeritage centre: cronenburg.net/treasures/
At the moment when the #exhibition was being cleared away, I was still able to take a few photos. (For more photos look at my blog). #embroidery #bonnets #caps #costumes #Alsace #goldwork #canetille #sequins #beads #glassbeads #rocailles #lacemaking #lace #Klosterarbeiten #TextileArt

Chaotic-looking embroidery with orange, dark blue and brown glass beads. They are fixed with silver canetille in a 3-D style. Red rhinestones are set in embossed metal, surrounded by canetille and sequins in silver. What seems to be so chaotic in the macro photo forms a floral design.A design of waves and lines on a cap. Gold and silver sequins are embroidered on canetille trims as a frame. Felt-like tubes in green, red and purple form waves and turquoise oval glass beads are embroidered on them.Detail of a bonnet motif illustrating the mix of materials and different techniques. In a floral frame of black velvet with silver sequins is a gold embroidery of a flower, decorated with twigs and leaves. The same black framed ornament, here with a red metallic flower and canetille embroidery.

Sometimes it's a pity when postings disappear in the chaos of the new. I have therefore collected my #photos from the exhibition with the beautifully embroidered caps and bonnets in my blog: cronenburg.net/treasures/ #embroidery #sewing #goldwork #histodon #HistoricCostumes #lacemaking #canetille #caps #bonnets #Alsace #museum #CulturalHeritage

As promised, another big thread about historic #Alsatian #bonnets and #caps - and what interests me most: #lacemaking, #laces #embroidery and #perlage. Even if I find the macro function of my smartphone lousy, I take the shots because I like to know how people made these pieces. This #craft is threatened with extinction, so I like to find out more about the #stitches and construction of pieces. 🧵 Yesterday I showed you 2 enigmatic photos of our special #exhibition about the #culturelHeritage of #sewing in #Alsace: mastodon.online/@NatureMC/1098
Today I'll reveal the secret and show you more in a thread. (Unfortunately, the photos were only taken with my mobile phone in the crowd.) #museum
We are talking about traditional #costume #embroidery and here specifically about traditional costume #bonnets. As always more info in the ALT texts.#costumes #France #franceculture

White bonnet with hand-woven golden lace and traditional golden floral embroidery with paillettes, canetilles, embossed metal and rhinestone glass.A colourful bonnet with floral design in shades of red and green and silver. Embossed decoration pieces (f.e. blossoms), silver canetille etc. There's also a solver thread woven into the white fabric, giving a diamond pattern. The embroidered surface of an ancient Alsatian "Schlupfkapp", the famous cap with a bow. It is embroidered with golden metal and canetille, golden and silver paillettes and coloured rhinestones. Since the 19th century, the bow grew bigger (thanks to modern industrial weaving methods) and the embroidered caps were given up.
