Broad-Winged Hawk in Flight

This is a broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) that I spot occasionally. I was fortunate with this photograph—the hawk banked just right, allowing me to capture its top side. Lately, I haven't seen many hawks, though that might be because I often sit under the canopy of my pergola, unaware of what's soaring overhead.

While I was focused on the ground looking for wildflowers, this Broad Winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) flew in to a nearby tree. I had just enough time to snap a few shots before he noticed me.

Hunting Hawk in Motion

Charlie and I went to sit outside at 0730 this morning. There was a lone white pigeon in the middle of the yard near some feeders and a bird bath. It was the same pigeon that I posted a couple days ago ... I think she might be domesticated because she doesn't fear us being close. Anyway, after a few minutes the pigeon took off I looked up and saw a hawk was descending. I almost dropped my camera trying to capture the moment. I was too slow, but the broad-winged (Buteo platypterus) landed close by in a tree, then took off again flying low over the yard ... I managed a couple of pics then.

Visit my gallery, I generally add new content every couple of days or so. The URL is below:

Sky Hunter’s Glide

Beware, death itself is in the air. This broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) buzzed my backyard this morning, looking for a meal. I've never actually seen a hawk take a bird from my yard; the only evidence is the occasional puff of feathers left from the left behind after the struggle.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

"The captivating photograph captures a bird of prey in mid-flight against a serene backdrop of clear blue sky. The bird’s powerful wings are fully extended, showcasing an impressive wingspan. The intricate feather patterns are a harmonious blend of earthy tones: varying shades of brown, cream, and white. Dark speckles and bands adorn the feathers, adding texture and depth.

As the bird soars, its tail fans out gracefully, mirroring the coloration and banding seen on its wings. Its head is turned slightly to the right, revealing a sharp beak and a keen, watchful yellow eye. Sunlight bathes the bird from above, casting subtle shadows beneath its wings and body, emphasizing the contours and details of each feather." - Copilot with edits

Sky Hunter

“Graceful wings slice through the azure canvas, as the hawk scans the heavens for its next prey.” - Copilot

This broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) flew high overhead this morning while Charlie and I sat outside.

"Each fall, hundreds of thousands of Broad-winged Hawks leave the northern forests for South America. They fill the sky in sometimes huge flocks that can contain thousands of birds at a time, and these “kettles” are a prime attraction at many hawkwatch sites. As they move from the broad stretches of North America to narrow parts of Central America their numbers get concentrated, leading people to describe places such as Veracruz, Mexico, and Panama as a “river of raptors.”" - allaboutbirds.org

" In the captured moment, the broad-winged hawk gracefully glides from right to left across the frame. Its powerful wings, stretched wide, slice through the cerulean sky, each feather catching the sunlight. The hawk’s keen eyes remain fixed on the horizon, a vigilant sky hunter in pursuit of its next quarry. " - Copilot

Heading into the 3rd week of September is the peak of #autumn #migration in the US for #BroadWingedHawk. I found two on my morning walk here in #Stillwater, #Oklahoma, but also kinda got attacked by a couple of unleashed dogs. (They got confused when I ignored them and never actually bit me, but they could've easily been hit by cars on the busy road they dashed across to get to me.)

Scatter!

Huh ... I thought I posted this hours ago. I forgot to click "Publish." Oh well, better late than never. Or is it late when I set my own loose schedule? ;)

There are usually several birds in my backyard in the morning. Titmice, chickadees, cardinals, doves, etc. This broad winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) flew over the yard this morning, it made a couple passes and there wasn't another bird in sight. The second this hawk was gone, it was party time again.

This hawk is flying from bottom left to upper right against a light blue sky. The hawk's body is an elongated oval, like a long narrow football. Its dark beak is short with a pronounced hook on the end. Eyes are dark, I can't discern the color. Its head is covered in brown feathers. The wings are spread out as if gliding, the undersides are mostly light tan but there are patterns of dark brown that decorate the wings and body. The tips of the flight feathers are dark brown. The hawks' legs and feet are folded back against its tail with is slightly spread to maybe 10 of 15 degrees. The tail is decorated with light tan and dark brown stripes, the tip is dark brown.

Not this morning.

I wanted to post a photo from this morning. I saw a broad winged hawk and a chimney swift and took a bunch of pictures, but ISO too high, the hawk was too far away, and the chimney swift was small and moving fast. So, all the photos were really bad. But here's a broad winged hawk I took on another day. I don't have a photo of a chimney swift and am quite disappointed that I messed up the shoot. Live and learn.

This hawk is flying from right to left. The back of the hawk, wings, and tail are tilted slightly towards the camera. The hawk's beak however is level giving us a profile if the hooked beak and left yellow eye. The top of the wings is brown with lighter roundish highlights giving the back and wings sort of a plated look. The tips of the flight feathers are black. The tail is fanned out at about 30 degrees and there are four stripes of color crossing the fan; staring and the base, there is a narrow white stripe, then a larger black stripe followed by another white stripe of similar width, the final black stripe is the widest and includes the tips of the feathers.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

I'm up early this morning. I sustained some fire ant bites on my arms while working in the yard. It itches ... very annoying. I've heard that you're not supposed to scratch the itch because it only makes it worse. What did I do? You guessed it, I scratched the itch. It does provide some very temporary relief. Anyhow, I put some bug bite gunk on it and here I am.

Does it pay to be annoying? Well, it didn't work out for the fire ants. Which makes me wonder about self-important people that you occasionally see at a store with an over inflated sense of entitlement. What is to gain by meanness?

“I've just been bitten on the neck by a vampire... mosquito. Does that mean that when the night comes, I will rise and be annoying?” - Vera Nazarian

“Be kind to people even when they treat you badly. You will be the one who will win in the end.” - Alex Elle

This is a photograph of a broad winged hawk, very high up in the sky flying beneath some white clouds. Except for the clouds the sky is very blue and there are tops of slightly out of focus trees at the bottom of the frame. The brown hawk is at the top of the frame, wings spread and flying to the right and up.

I adjusted to colors on the photograph to make the blue bluer and the green greener. It lends a very slight surrealness to the picture.

Danger Will Robinson!

My wife and I were working in the back yard this afternoon. My wife pruned the bottom of the oak tree. I have a chipper, so we ran the branches she cut off through the chipper. We also put a couple rose bushes in the ground and did some other stuff.

We took breaks at the outdoor table under the umbrella. While sitting there, two woodpeckers, one downy and one red bellied, landed in the crepe myrtles by the fence. I've been wanting a close up of a downy woodpecker, but my camera was in the house. I went and got my camera, but of course they were gone when I returned. But a little while later, the broad winged hawk, that's been around lately, showed up high in the sky.

This hawk is flying from right to left in the fame. It's tilted towards the camera and pointed slightly away so that there is a pretty good view of its back. The background is blue sky.

The hawk's head is turned so that it is looking straight ahead. Its yellow beak is pointed slightly away from the camera, but the sharp curve of the upper mandible is visible; the beak is darker at the point. The left black eye reflects light on the upper back side. The brown wings are spread and in a slight downward posture. The feathers on the back and wings are dark brown but the round edges of the feathers are white creating a intricate pattern across the wings and back. The flight feathers are even more intricate they are white with two black lines running across the feathers and black feather tips. The tail feathers are fanned out nearly 90 degrees. The feather pattern begins at the base of the tail where its brown like the body then there is a narrow line of white that cuts across in and arc, then a rather thick arc of black, and then an equally thick arc of white, the feathers end in black tips.

Uhh ohhh. ...

Yesterday, while out with the dogs, I saw this broad-winged hawk, but I didn't have my camera. I'm not absolutely sure it's the same hawk but pretty sure. When I saw it yesterday, it wasn't having a good time. There were two crows harassing the hawk, trying to run it out of town. The crows were about the same size as the hawk, maybe even a bit larger.

"Crows often attack hawks because they see them as a threat. To defend themselves from a natural predator, crows often go on the offensive and pester the predatory bird. This behavior usually drives the other bird away and keeps the crows safe." - birdwatchingpro.com

This is actually a photo that I took a week or so ago. The hawk was flying almost directly overhead. I've oriented it here so that the head is facing up, tail down, and wings pointing right and left. It's underside is visible.

The hawk's head is twisted very slightly to its right. Its beak is very curved to a point and if zoomed in a yellow eye a black pupal is visible. The head feathers are a dark brown but fade to a yellow farther down the body. The feather pattern on the body and wings is yellow with streaks of dark brown. The wing feather tips are dark brown as well as the tail. But the tail has a lighter stripe midway. I'm unable to decern exactly where the feet are in this photo and wonder are they tucked under the feathers somehow or was the hawk too high for the camera lens to capture them.

I like to sit in by backyard with my camera and watch the birds in the yard and the sky. It's not rare that I'll see something interesting. This broad-winged hawk was in the sky yesterday afternoon. I noticed after all the birds in the yard (and there were a lot) suddenly took off, leaving the backyard quiet.

"One of the greatest spectacles of migration is a swirling flock of Broad-winged Hawks on their way to South America. Also known as “kettles,” flocks can contain thousands of circling birds that evoke a vast cauldron being stirred with an invisible spoon. A small, stocky raptor with black-and-white bands on the tail, the Broad-winged Hawk is a bird of the forest interior and can be hard to see during the nesting season. Its call is a piercing, two-parted whistle." - allaboutbirds.org

This hawk is flying from left to right against a blue sky. Its light brown head is turned so the right side of its head is visible revealing a black eye and short black hooked beak. Has the name implies, its wings are broad with and intricate design of feathers underneath, as with most hawks, the tips of the wing feathers are darker than the rest of the light brown wing. Its dark tail is squared off and has a light-colored stripe going across a few inches from the tip. Its legs and feet are folded back against the tail and blend in with the tail feather colors.

This stunningly beautiful, solitary hunter, is peculiar in its behaviour of migrating in massive flocks (Kettles).

They survive on almost no water getting what they need from their food!!!
