Butterflies declined by 22% in just 2 decades across the US. Nearly one-third of the 342 butterfly species we were able to study declined by more than half. Twenty-two species fell by more than 90%. Only nine actually increased in numbers.

Butterflies as a metaphor for what it is for us humans to live, to exist.
Maybe that’s what fascinates me. I see in them our own fragile beauty, whose appearance for so short a time has been anticipated for aeons and watched in awe by the rest of the cosmos.

Painted Lady butterfly feeds on a lavender flower. Its wings are wide open, once bright but now pale orange, and brown blotches, and brown and white corners. Its antennae are still erect, but edges of wings are jagged, bits eaten away by its experiences in battling weather and other creatures

Butterfly population in Britain halves in 2024.
Tony Juniper #NaturalEngland chair: 'The butterfly data is an early signal of what lies ahead.. a warning from nature as to how far we’ve gone towards taking the resilience out of natural systems. This circles back on people in terms of our food security which depends on that web of life still functioning.'

We had a blast of summer yesterday, & with it an influx of butterflies into our garden. I was excited to see the only Painted Lady this year, & a Red Admiral - both species Vanessa. I got my phone out & got a quick shot. But when Iooked at the photo the Painted Lady isn’t there! The butterfly here is definitely a Comma!? Maybe the Painted Lady flew off seconds before I pointed my camera?

a dark purple buddleia flower, with signs of browning in front of a beech hedge. On the flower are two butterflies feeding with closed wings. One is a Comma, with its ragged wing-edges and the tell-tale white comma mark in the middle. Below it, the other is a red admiral, with black, red and white markings.

The last of my Gatekeepers #inMyGarden this summer, I suspect - while it rested on a dead leaf momentarily I managed to get a quick shot on my phone before it flitted away as Gatekeepers do .

Gatekeeper butterflies are amongst the declining species on Uk The changing climate is influencing this, but also here local agricultural practices, including hedgerow management. This week, finally, I’ve spotted a few gatekeepers in the garden and on the lane, like this one resting at the foot of a hedgerow on warm dead foliage after the hedge has been cut for traffic management

I’d given up waiting for Small Tortoiseshell butterflies to visit #InMyGarden - assuming the locals had been wiped out. There are much reduced numbers in many places in UK. So this specimen appearing yesterday gave me great joy.

Dark green fritillary on spear thistle. Such brave, strong fliers, but this one was more interested in feeding than flitting away. Let me get close for phone pic. #Scotland #nature #butterfly #wildlife #ButterflyConservation

Gatekeeper butterflies are amongst the declining species on Uk -my pic dates to last year, as I have yet to spot any in our local hedgerows. The changing climate is influencing this, but also here local agricultural practices, including hedgerow management.

At last, in this so-called UK ‘summer’, our garden has a four-winged visitor, a lovely Meadow Brown, the first one to come here in July.

For my 1st sighting of Green-veined Whites this year I took a walk from the garden down the lane - behold! I spot a mating pair on the ground.
Female Green-veined Whites mate with several males to increase the number of her eggs. Male Green-veined Whites transfer sperm but also nutrients the female can use to increase egg production & may transfer 15-25% of their body mass to females during mating.

My daily lepidopterological (is that a new word?) activities are truly picking up, as of yesterday.
#InMyGarden not one, not two, but three butterfly species visited me, and two of them gave me the stare: a Red Admiral and a Small White. The third one - a male Orange Tip - was too busy flitting about to look around.

Intervening to support declining #butterfly species does work. Good to read about the small pearl-bordered fritillary, vulnerable in Shropshire. Replacing lost habitat helps, like marsh violets for these. Here in NE #Wales Orangetips (my recent pic is black-tipped female) are everywhere, where mustard-garlic plants are left to flourish in hedgerows & so long as these are left to grow wild untouched & not killed off or cut down. #SaveButterflies #ButterflyConservation

At last, the first butterfly species in the year to populate our lanes & gardens - the Orange Tip Anthocharis cardamines - has arrived here. A female (which has no orange tips, of course) is visiting us today - being 20 April they are later than usual

Butterflies are an indicator species, meaning they can tell us about the health of the wider environment. 2023 data in UK show continued decline of once common Small Tortoiseshell. I recorded them only in ones and twos in #InMyGarden whereas there wd once be up to a dozen on the lavender. ☹️

On my walk #today I headed for a hedge-lined lane where I knew there would be sun-traps. I thought I might see the first #butterfly this year, drawn by the warmth. Sure enough! Pararge Aegeria - a Speckled Wood - flitting in and out of the hedge. I managed a hasty blurred shot of it when it landed briefly in the undergrowth.
