After watching #cooking shows, I wonder if #chefs / #cooks can finish preparing any meal without a 10-second countdown timer screaming at them while they drip their sweat into the #food.

"When #Ashkenazi #Jewish people emigrated to the #US in the early 20th century, #latkes came along for the ride. They’re as popular as ever in Jewish-#American #Hanukkah #cooking, though they’re now made vegetable #oil instead of #shmaltz. They’re so popular in fact that they’ve gone commercial, with some grocery stores carrying dry latke mixes or ready-made frozen latkes. It's a workout to shred #potatoes and make them by hand, so, it’s not surprising that there’s now a market for a quick alternative.

But which brand tastes like homemade? We asked a panel of Jewish professional #chefs to find out what the best store-bought latke is—plus, the best way to reheat them and ideas for serving this traditional Hanukkah treat."

–sn–

Chopping chives as competitive sport? Chefs chasing a perfect score

The British chef behind the Instagram account RateMyChives - in which he judges the quality of chefs' and home cooks' piles of minced herbs - recalls the moment several years ago when he realized the significance of a nicely chopped chive. It came, inauspiciously, during a drunken conversation with a date. Read More ,

MANILA, Philippines – Is sustainable, fair, and clean food for all even possible for the Philippines?

The question has been circling the minds and hearts of chefs, farmers, entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, advocates, and nongovernment organizations for years — and it has only grown louder and more urgent. Rising inflation has been hitting households just as hard as our farmers, who struggle for a steady income. Climate change brings floods and typhoons, and consumers are more conscious about health and where their food is coming from.

The stakes are high. But the spirit of the Filipino community soars higher.

From November 18 to 23, Bacolod City — the emerging slow food capital of the Philippines — offered a vivid, hopeful answer. For five days, the City of Smiles became a beacon of light for both consumer and producer, and a delicious avenue of storytelling through food and delicacies from all over the archipelago.

"Eight hundred and eleven pounds of potatoes, 402 #challahs, 68 #chefs, 59 people named David and 27 people named Rachel. It all adds up to the world’s largest #Shabbat #dinner, which was organized by Temple Emanuel’s Streicker Center and held at the Javits Center on Friday night.

Some 2,800 #Jewish #NewYorkers packed the top floor of Javits North on 11th Avenue to participate in The Big Shabbat — an official attempt to host the largest #Shabbatdinner in history, as verified by the #GuinnessBook of #WorldRecords.

More than a year in the making, the massive dinner spotlighted dishes created by high-profile #Jewishchefs (Beejhy Barhany, Jake Cohen, Joan Nathan and Adeena Sussman) and featured entertainment from the likes of #Broadway stars Steven Skybell and Shoshana Bean, who performed “Sabbath Prayer” from “Fiddler on the Roof.”
