Twain geeft een blauwdruk voor een succesvolle sekte of kerk, gebaseerd op Eddy’s handelswijze en op haar boek 'Manual of the Mother Church'.

Mark Twain bundelde zijn striemende teksten over Christian Science in 1907, in de periode dat Baker Eddy's kerk een steile opgang aan het maken was.

Het eerste deel is een bijna slapstickachtige beschrijving van een (fictieve) ontmoeting met een steeds warriger bazelende Christian Science-healer.

Mark Twain sloeg begin 20ste eeuw al de nagel op de kop: "they all do their miracles with the same old, powerful instrument — the patient’s imagination". /2

In 1875 publiceerde Mary Baker Eddy haar boek 'Science and Health' (in latere edities 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'). Eerder prematuur als ik Wikipedia mag geloven: het boekwerk zou in de volgende jaren zo’n 400 keer gereviseerd worden.

Volgens Eddy moet niet alleen de gezondheid 'geheald' worden, maar ook de zonde, die daar onlosmakelijk mee verbonden is. En dit in een eigen kerk die beschikt over ruime financiële middelen. Halleluja /1
