Hey #compostodon and #compost nerds - I'm working with a nature charity on their #composting next week.

They have a lot of woody material but no chipper (though might be able to befriend an arborist). We're going to look at ways around that and so far I've got the following ideas:

- Dead hedges: let it rot naturally in a way that helps wildlife.
- Biochar: would need to build a retort but could be a good activity.
- Hugelmound: probably not as they don't grow much.

What have I missed?

It is nearly two years since I last tooted about my #vermicompost bin. There are simple reasons for this: the system stabilized, I got used to it, and other matters in life distracted me from writing about it. There is, however, a recent development that warrants another update. In short, ... *takes a deep breath*... I feel disappointed by my own #design and I want a different bin. Let's explore this. 🧵🔽

Look at this little knapweed bloom I found. In November. Under a pile of yard debris that has been there since midsummer.

This is why these guys are noxious. They are the life that finds a way.

(The pile is now in compost.)

A delicate purple bloom with thin tendrils, about the size of a US quarter. It is coming up among pale green young grass (also noxious and determined) and half-rotted pine needles and cones.

What a good question. It’s probably about hashtagS, and labelling of what the practice is. Knitters knit etc.

Now I’m curious to know what others find helpful. I follow people more than hashtags, and then when I find someone’s making something I notice if they’re sharing it to a hashtag and I’ll amble in that direction.

#compostodon for people making something of waste is one you might not think of. And I notice the makers of #solarpunk and the #visiblemending community.

Re that last boost on finding experts near you, @bonni208 mentions finding the #compostodon community here, and this got me thinking about how we become each other’s counsel in all sorts of practical ways. Relational expertise: not just credentials in the knowing sense, but credibility in the trusted sense.

Don't get me wrong, the kitchen garden is at it's finest in midsummer when it is (apparently suddenly) full up with growing food.

But this moment is a close second for me. Everything cleared out and mulched with compost I have made myself from on-site materials. Nothing more to do till planting time next year.

A photograph taken from the corner of, and looking diagonally across, a rectangular area of vegetable garden approximately ten metres by six metres, bounded by a tall deer and rabbit proof mesh fence supported by wooden posts at around two metre spacing.

Within the fence, the space is divided into alternating 90cm beds and 60cm walkways, separated by old wooden fence posts laid on the ground. The beds are parallel to the short side of the rectangle (to the right of the camera). An additional walkway runs along the end of all the beds on the left hand side of the picture.

Three of the beds have a small bushy nasturtium plant half way along, and there are sweet peas growing up the fence forming the short side of the enclosure furthest from the camera.

Otherwise, all the beds are empty, and covered with brown compost.

The walkways are surfaced with wood chippings. There are patches of grass and weeds coming up through it in places.

Beyond the enclosure is a grassy area with orchard trees, and a distant skyline of larger trees. The sky is blue and the scene is lit by a low evening (hah, at 4pm!) sun from the right hand side.

Oh noes!!! There's leaves falling all over my precious formal lawns. I'll have to clear them up so it doesn't look messy.

Lol jk, it's "free biomass on an easily rakeable surface" season. Woohoo! Please drop more.

C'est enfin en place à #Asnieres. Je vais pouvoir réduire ma production de #lombricompost à mon usage personnel.

Je crois qu'elle a rarement vu un gars aussi enthousiaste sur la gestion des déchets organiques la dame ce matin qui faisait la distribution aux inscrit du quartier a cote du marché. 😅

Ça raisonne avec le livre de #BeckyChambers : Archives de l'exode, 3ieme tome de la série des voyageurs ( https://www.l-atalante.com/catalogue/la-dentelle-du-cygne/archives-de-lexode-9791036000218/ ). Tessa, une des personnage principale, est composteuse de corps dans le service funéraire du vaisseau (seule méthode disponible dans l'archipel de nefs spatiales) c'est plutôt bien détaillé et particulièrement l'aspect "rituel".

Allemachtig wat een hoop werk verzet weer. Ik had (veel) meer tuinafval dan ik kwijt kan in m'n 3 vaks- compostsysteem.
De compost die klaar is er uit (hij is heel mooi!!); deels in de tuin verspreid en de rest in een big bag geschept. Daarna de beluchtingsbuizen schoongemaakt en weer begonnen met vullen. Voornamelijk grassen, vliersnoeisel, braam, lisdodde en distels. Afgewisseld met lagen houtsnippers.
Alles water gegeven. 🥇🥇🥇

Mais bordel ils font quoi dans le bois des crayons de papiers. Le copeau était dans le bac le plus vieux du lombricompost (~3 mois) il est intact.
