Any ideas what this beetle bug is? Shield bug maybe? #insect

@janwwbosch I had a hunt and could find only a reply that seemed like the #compostodon account posted they were leaving but I completely missed it at the time and the original post isn't visible 😢

Did #BigFertiliser get to the @Compostodon account? Tried to tag it this morning. My only set of hashtags and account I have in their own separate column.
Yeah, baby. It's now 2/3 full with layers of cardboard, grass, and bokashi. I'll finish it off tonight after work, and set up the second bin. Really lovely, sweet grass from a neighbour. Already smelling like it's fermenting. And I'm finally getting rid of the moving boxes. 🤣
Next job is to confirm the rumour that I can get an unlimited volume of manure from a farmer down the road...
You should maybe add #compostodon
@yvan The #compost #Compostodon tag community might have advice.
UK Based Question: What loam based peat-free compost are people recommending these days. Not the cheap fluffy "potting compost" crap at B&Q that is full of wood and barely retains water!
Something soil/loam based.
Few of the usual retailers spec the stuff properly!
(I am being consulted on specifying the bits to buy to put some salad planters in at work.)

Our thuja trees are relentless. Every year, without fail, they produce a crapton of leaves(?), seeds, and other assorted stuff. We use it as cover around bushes etc. as it's free and our dog doesn't eat it. But I will soon have a third filled compost heap and no more places to put it.
I have pleaded, but the trees won't listen. How can the shedding never end? Where does it all come from???
Compost worms are aquatic!
This is (I believe) an Eisenia foetida (red wiggler compost worm) living in the soil and gravel substrate of a fish aquarium I set up a couple of months ago. It is fully submerged with no direct access to the atmosphere!
@yvan A friend tried doing a Johnson-Su bioreactor with one but didn't have the discipline to keep it watered. But you could definitely just fill it with green-heavy woodchip and just leave it for a year or two.
Ooh, here's a guide to doing one with an old IBC! https://www.fwi.co.uk/arable/land-preparation/soils/how-to-build-a-johnson-su-bioreactor-to-produce-your-own-on-farm-biology
Advice sought from those who do #NoMowMay - or know about #Rewilding gardens. Does the no mowing include before May - so that you leave it fallow until at least June? Or would the garden benefit from a trim in March/April if dry enough to mow? (If we do ever get a couple of dry days in a row here in the West of Ireland.) Conflicting advice in the past, especially from my pro-mowing partner. Aim to encourage wildflowers for pollinators.
Also tagging #compostodon as potential fonts of knowledge 🌼
Can You Put Dead Animals In Compost?
https://thatbackyard.com/can-i-compost-dead-animals/
In short, yes, sensibly, but it’s not really worth it. (I’ve chucked the odd dead mouse and a drowned bird found in the water butt in mine - just made sure they were buried in the middle).
Thanks to some help from Laura’s muscles we started spreading the mature #compost onto the beds today. It looks great. I hate having chronic fatigue but it does mean my compost matures really well.
There used to be quite lively discussions under the posts by @compost and the hashtag #compostodon.
May your spoons last, especially in the months when you need them for planting and harvesting!
Updating my #introduction to celebrate changed balance of life things. I live and walk by the sea in Wollongong, and I’m a gardener. In 2025 I joined up with a small organisation focused on compassionate ways of working in healthcare. I’ve been on here since 2016 and I’m still here, listening and thinking.
I believe we have to work together differently to face the future we’re facing. Life is fragile.

Compost Culture: An Introductory Film

A nice video about Birmingham’s community #composting project which I was involved with before long-Covid took me off the board. This features the three-bay structures I designed and co-built last year and it’s quite emotional seeing them in use.
